Best camping snacks

I need some easy snacks to take with me this weekend. I probably won't have access to a fridge, but am wondering what would keep in an ice chest and my kids could snack on them. It's a family reunion but last year they tended to forget the little kids. So I thought about just bringing some simple snacks my kids would like. Poptarts would be easy and wouldn't require being cold. Any other ideas?

DO you think you could keep popscicles cold enough in an ice chest?

No way on the popscicles. Generally you don't want to take anything that melts in an ice chest (well, except ice). The logic being - well, you know how long it takes ice to melt in an ice chest? That's about how long your popscicles would survive.

As for other easy to take things. You could make rice crispy treats. I'm not exactly an expert on what TO take though.

If they like cheese, you could cut it in cubes and put them in plastic bags. Or slices to eat with crackers. Carrots, celery, or any other raw veggies that they like. GRAPES! any fruit for that matter. I try to think of healthy snacks as there will probably be plenty of chips and desserts around to attract their attention!

Pickles might be good...if they like them.

If you put water in ziploc baggies and freeze them flat they fit in coolers better and seem to take longer to melt so the first day you could take frozen gogurts, with the understanding that they need to be gone that night. also, the frozen bags can be layered so you have layers of ice on your cold things. freeze some grapes and take them along, they will last after defrosting. a sleeve of crackers and a jar of peanut butter is a great standby popcorn, maybe the jiffy pop stuff to do over the campfire/stove. granola bars, bananas (all fruit has been suggested and they all work great), single serving applesauce, raisins, rice cakes, cereal that they can eat dry, graham crackers.

all i can think of right now, but go through your cabinets and see what you have. I bet you will find tons of things.

happy camping.

karen - who is giving her dh a tent for his birthday today and hopes to go camping in a couple weeks

That's a great idea, freezing water in ziplock bags like that.

I'll have to try that.

water in bags

works great!! we drive from maryland to the outer banks for vacation every summer and we stop at the dunes to play for an hour and we have breakfast and lunch on the road and stop at the nature center, in all a good 8 hour trip and when we get to the beach house they are still partially frozen!!

just make sure the bags are closed tight and if you are nervous put them in one bag and zip then put in another baggy with the opening at the other end and close that one tight as well. try to get as much air out as possible to make them flat. and try to find a flat place in the freezer (that is my trouble right now)

good luck.

karen

Good Ole Raisins and Peanuts. The cyclist's energy mix.

I like to add in M&M's and chopped dates to mine.

I like taking beef jerky on camping trips, easy to carry, don't take up much space. You can get them at any Wal-mart or a place like a 7-Eleven, one of those quick type stores.
