I think my brother is on the verge of getting Type II Diabetes. Hes overweight, and he eats too much. Of course it also has to do with his body biochemistry so I really don't know if he has a good chance of getting it or pretty darn slim. Nonetheless, being overweight does put a person into a slight disadvantge position. If weight is not kept, chances are a person will get diabetes in the near future. This is just my opinion. -Corg

I believe it! Remember when candy was a treat? Now it is consumed daily. ![]() And school lunches...none of them are good if you ask me. Even the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are so loaded with PB&J that the kids won't eat them. My kids are constantly having "junk food parties" at their school as a reward for something or other. ?? |

Just think of all the carby snacks for kids that weren't available to us when we were younger: fruit snacks, fruit rollups, granola bars (including those covered with chocolate and other garbage), dead sweet cereal in canisters and snack bag sized portions, juice boxes, jello cups, plus the candy aisle and the chips aisle have doubles in size... I can even remember back when doritoes were first introduced to the market...wasn't till I was in 5th grade! I let my girls have cereal bars and juice boxes (only those w/calcium added), and fruit snacks when we are on the go, but I try to limit all the other junk. The nice thing is they love their fruits and veggies and they even enjoy the Alvarado Street bread that I buy... Kath

One more thing I wanted to add was soda - how machines are popping up everywhere...I think my high school got its first soda machine in my senior year in '82. And how much the soda aisle has grown as well...growing up my favorite soda was club soda for some reason and I am glad I developed a taste for it early on!!!! No carbs! When I visited my relatives in TN recently I was appalled at how much soda they drank - ughhhhhhh! (and yeah all but 2 of them are overweight, including the kids). My kids prefer water - milk - juice in that order. Occasionally I allow them some seltzer or some splenda-sweetened soda but that's it! Generally if you ask my girls what they want to drink they will say water first... Kath
