Luckily I live in Eastern Oklahoma and we barely got any rain yesterday.

The closest I've come to a tornado was when i was a kid and a tornado went right over my grandma's house (she was babysitting me and my brother and cousin) and then took out the Safeway two blocks away. My husband lived a few streets over from her and he remembers it going over his house too.

The really scary part of it was that my brother was in the front yard in the tree right before it came over...My grandma had to knock him down with a broom to get him to come in!!!! It's funny now but I was scared to death at the time!!

OK I'll be the first (corrected - second!)! I live in Rowlett, Texas, 30 miles east of Dallas. The storms here were horrible, and we were just on the outter rim of the big storm. The kids and I were in the laundry room and my dh was out back shooting video. The clouds were literally circling above our heads and the wind was carrying one level of clouds in one direction and another level in exactly the opposite direction. Once there was a spiral circling directly over our house and it seemed so low I could almost reach up and touch it! I was terrified, but dh was loving it. We didn't have any damage out here thank goodness. And the kids had so much fun in the laundry room that they stayed in their playing campout all night. Who would have thought?? Some other areas around here were hit really really hard, unfortunately.

I hope everyone is alright. I never use to be to freaked about tornados until we got the tail end of one a couple of years ago. That was some scary poopity-doo-doo. It took down part of one of our larger trees and many smaller ones. It also sucked the screens out of the windows, I even went around cracking the windows open. I did learn to run a chainsaw!! LOL! The part of the tree that fell landed on our garage, Kenny and I spent an entire day cleaning it all up. We were VERY lucky! It's did MINOR damage to the roof of the garage. I also know that I NEVER EVER want to go thru that again and I always want to have a basement or cellar!
Hope more members check in..I'm having a rough time remembering who is from where..there's obviously texas_sweetie/Cheryl, Mayor/Joel lives in OK..ummmm.....

OHHHHH lizard_collins and Jilly..glad to see you and your family are alright...whew!!!

Tornado ripped through my rented old house in Des Moines, IA. Tornado season is from April-Oct generally. Once you smell the air you never forget that smell. It is the scariest thing I've ever gone through. Sirens never went off because lightning blew out the transformer. Did I say I never want to experience that again. Oh, one more almost a fact: they say... if a tornado rips through an area it will probably be 50-100 years before that happens again. That's NOT a given but a general rule. So it's usually a once in a lifetime thingy. YIKES. I love storms, but hate the damage they do.

I've lived in and around Tulsa my whole life (31 years) and I can remember two big ones coming through.

Besides the smell, you never forget the green of the sky either.

Being that I am originally from PA, I had never really experienced any tornados until I moved here.

The first few years, I was like a torist. I would sit by the windows and watch the huge hail and wind whipping everything around. I thought it was the neatest thing.

By about year 3, after several had "hopped" over my apartments and touched down within 2 to 3 miles of me, I began singing a different tune.

Last two years have not been that bad, but there were several years where many came very close to where I was living at the time. When I hear the sirens now, I'm in the closet or laundary room with the dog, and I stay very far away from the windows.

Glad to hear everyone is alright.

Thanks I'm fine I live about 45 mins from the Gulf of Mexico so I'm well away from the path that storm took. I'm like you mouse I never used to be freaked out either until this past October when a little twister came thru here. Hubby and I where in bed and hesard this loud roaring noise but really didn't think much about it cause it sounded like the flare stack on one of the plants we live near. But it got louder and closer than I heard bam and our house shook. Went to check it out a, opened my front door and all I could see was tree. It took my big oak in the front down , right on my house , luckly no damage, and in the back it took down a giant pine tree that was dead and we where gonna have to cut it down anyway. So i'm real leery (sp) about them now.

Well it was a rocking time in my house last night! We had one go just North of us and one to the South. The one to the South was heading straight for us, but about 10 minutes before it hit, it turned South of us. It was a nasty looking booger, but it kept drifting South and eventually passed through farmland and missed most of the cities (Waxahachie just avoided getting hit.) The storm passed right over us and large hail banged around. I thought I would loose my skylights, but they held.

It hasn't been that long since that Class 5 hit about six miles from my house (early 90s in Lancaster.)

We are suppose to get more of the same this weekend. Ya'll be praying for us.

I'm here too...

Right now the wind is really blowing outside, but I don't think we're getting any storms. Don't know, though. I'll have to go check the weather.

We happened to be in OKC the day the May 3rd one hit. We were at the zoo, and came home because it had started to get cloudy. To think that we were the same place as that mile wide thing, well, just gives me chills. Ugh...Hope I never have to go through that again.

OMG - I forgot to mention the green sky. Once you've seen and smelled the air - it's a definitely bone chiller. I pray for all of you in harm's way during this season to be safe. The years before leaving PA we had lots of micro-bursts. Out here we get monsoon season and it can kick up some very heavy damage, hail, wind, dust, lightning and thunder. Some of the rain is torrential if we get it and it doesn't get a chance to soak in because of being so arid. I remember having to crack the window, get into the basement and pray. Very serious stuff.
