Cleaning out my closet - WHAT TO KEEP??

I have waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many clothes, and I've finally, after decades of trying to be a conservative shopper, I've decided that in my case, it's just not possible. Soooooo, what I have is a closet crammed full of perfectly good clothes, 50% of which I haven't worn in at least two years or more, and probably won't ever again. The problem is......they still look like almost new! And 99% of them are still in style! I always try to buy things that aren't too trendy, yet still fashionable, so that I can wear them for more than one season. I don't know why I do that, because after one or two years, I'm tired of them anyway!

My mom and I talked about that when we were shopping in Florida. We'd convince ourselves to buy something because it was:
a] made well (will last forever)
b] classic (will be in style a long time)
c] a good price

I have never in my life worn out a piece of clothing. I know that's awful, but okay, I'm a sinner, and my big downfall is new clothes. Seriously, I'm not nearly as bad as I used to be, but still have too many clothes.

Now, what I want to know is....... how do I really decide what to keep and what to give away/sell on eBay? What is YOUR criteria for taking it out of your closet?

If you haven't worn it in a year, GET RID OF IT! ('course I don't follow that advice...LOL..I have my own problems with a stuffed closet and nothing to wear.LOL)

Sounds like you have alot of stuff that would sell on Ebay. Could be worse...you could sell it for a quarter at a garage sale...

That's what I planned to do this afternoon.......get pics taken and stuff listed on eBay. I've sold many clothes there in the past and have done really well. The hard part is PARTING with them!

I guess I have to ...........

JUST DO IT!

Good for you Pip! Since you have sold clothing on Ebay....what kind of items sell best and what are best to just sell in a yard sale?

Do you sell more than one item of clothing together.....like a bundle of shirts or sweaters or do you sell them all separate. The reason I ask is because of shipping. When I shop on the internet and have to pay shipping, I always want to order enough to make the shipping worth while. I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

I find that name brand things sell the best.......Liz Claiborne, Abercrombie (my girls' things, not mine...LOL), Eddie Bauer, The Limited, etc.).

Very seldom do I sell things in groups, though I have done that, too. What I will do is try to list many things at once, especially similar items, then point out in my auctions that I have other things for sale, and that I will combine auctions to save on shipping.

I have had good luck with selling clothes, and I have had many repeat buyers. I always wash it and iron it before I sell it. I'd be so embarrassed if someone got clothes from me and they had dirt on them or were all wrinkly. If there are any stains or anything, depending on how bad, I will either throw them away, or give those away, or sell those on a garage sale. Obviously, if they are too bad, I just pitch them. I don't want someone buying something from me with underarm stains, for example. I won't give that kind of stuff away, either. It gets pitched.

I hate to do garage sales, because even though eBay is a lot of work, I can do that when I want, in small portions. A garage sale is WAY too much work for me. I'm usually in a bad mood by the time the thing starts and if you have a rainy day.....all that work for what? I've had good garage sales, too, but I just prefer to do it on eBay. I get more for my clothes on there, too.

Okay, I took some pictures. Now.....will I get them listed? And geesh, this isn't even a dent.

Thanks for the help Pip! I might sell some items on ebay in the future too. We usually have yard sales but I HATE them. My kids have things that they never even wore. I hate to sell them at yard sales.

Thanks again!!! Good luck on your ebay auctions!!

Do what I do, put them in three piles:

1. Can't live without it
2. Very cute, but don't wear it much
3. Was I stoned when I bought this?

Get rid of all of #3 and half of #2...There you go, you are done!!!!

Is everything the right color on you?
Does everything fit?
Do you have items that are hard to clean or take care of?

Maybe if you eliminate those...

Does it look good on you...and does it make you look good? It can be the most beautiful item of clothing, but if it doesn't make you look good, then get rid of it...
