Shocked Do you throw away food?

I was chatting with one friend of mine and I have no idea how we ended up on this discussion. She was telling that she and her DH throw away food all the time. I am totally against throwing food out. I always think to myself that if I don;t need anything, I won't buy it but why should I buy it and then throw it away? There are so many poor people in the world who cannot even afford 2 meals a day...why not help them out instead of throwing food!!

I understand what you're saying, Dev, but sometimes even when we think we bought "too little" perishables, it goes to waste. There are only two of us and sometimes not all things get eaten. I don't throw away food "all the time", but I do more than I should. So my answer to your poll was "Yes." It's mostly vegetables and meat that get thrown out. *sigh* I'll try to be careful from now on.

I am always bargain hunting for any good deals...

Not much of a deal if I just throw it away. But I don't keep food very long. I am so afraid of making someone sick with food poisoning.

If we don't eat it then the dogs, cats, chicken, birds, or what ever critter we have around at the time might like it.

Very rarely. I have adjusted my recipes so I'm only making 4 servings at a time. I shop so we have enough food for a week, as far as fruits and veggies. I freeze meat so it will keep until it's needed and thaw it out in the microwave. I'm really careful with our $$ and hate to waste anything.

I do the same thing. When I say I throw out meat, it's usually what our in-laws cook for us. I love their cooking, but many times they give us too much! I've asked them over and over to give us little, but they don't listen. They corner me when hubby's not in the room and pressure me to say yes. The other day I finally told hubby, "You better say something if they insist on giving us food." With my luck, this last time they didn't. LOL I also freeze cooked meat, but I'm not much of a meat eater so it goes to waste. (I'm referring to beef. I never let chicken or pork chops go to waste)

I once got violently ill from eating old lunchmeat (to this day I can't look at turkey pastrami without the memory!). The day I used it, it seemed fine. The next day my sister was nursing me back to health and pointed out that the remaining meat looked really bad. Moral of the story, throw it out before you get sick. Now I freeze half the package and use the remainder within 3 days or it's thrown away. It's not worth getting sick over!

I do the same thing. I generally make a note (mentally or on paper) about what vegetables I might need and meat etc for the week or so and then I would only buy that much. First of all, I consider wasting precious $$ when I throw out food...even thought that may be just a $. I don;t know but somehow I just cannot bring myself to throw food away.

I must say I am surprised by everyone's response. I was expecting DODers to be more careful with food...I guess! LOL!

Guilty!

I throw away food daily. If it's past the "date," it's trash. Sometimes my roommate will eat it, but I can't stand leftovers and when you cook for 1, a lot is wasted.

We occasionally have something pushed to the back of the fridge that looks alittle green. We always have leftovers and we almost always eat all of it. (7 people...someone's bound to like it) I did throw a cucumber away yesterday that noone felt like eating and it was all mushy. (ick) I could just kick myself when that happens. It is so easy to cut up and throw out on the table before a meal. The scavengers come and gobble it up. Good planning eliminates waste, but everyone fails from time to time. If we make something that we don't like, it has to be pretty disgusting for us to throw it away. LOL As far as expired stuff...we are much more lenient than most of you. We aren't stupid, but we don't automatically throw it out if it's past the expiration date.

LOL You all are gonna laugh, but I've been known to drink milk a week past the exp. date. Hey, I was desperate and I needed to have that cereal. Same with eggs. My mom, is on the other end of the spectrum. If it's the date on the carton and it's not yet finished, she'll throw out whatever's left. I think it's just a guideline. Once it starts smelling funky and walking around the fridge, I won't go near it.

Most of the expired stuff in my home is over waaaay before the expiry date! But if something is expired and there is some left over, that definitely has to go. Don't wanna food poison anyone!
