| New graphic Cig packs in Canada New graphic cigarette packs in Canada As you may already know, the government has done it again, from only about 8 years ago, with no warnings whatsoever to large white and black warnings and as of the new year of 2001, the new "picture packs" with graphic images have been introduced and slowly phased in. As Players and Matinée we're the first to introduce the packs in Ontario, the other tabacco companies followed along. This is definately not fair to smokers, having to look at the new packs, when they already know what cigarettes can do, but is everyone aware that a car exaust pipe can do worse to you than cigarettes can in a lifetime? Or what about alcohol bottles, if they want to do it to tobacco companies and smokers, why on earth are they not putting an alcoholic's liver on a bottle, or showing what that does to your brain? These new packs are costing the tobacco companies billions of dollars. But the government still controls the cost of cigarettes nationwide, making billions a year in tobacco taxes, likewise with alcohol. If they do this to smokers, it's only fair that they do it to drivers, and alcoholics. If you want to get in contact with Health Canada, visit their website at: [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Alcohol kills more people COMBINED than all other drugs, including cocaine and heroin. But you never hear about the War on Beer. Yes, I agree....lets put pics on all harmful things...including a blocked artery on a package of bacon. Why not? If it is our business what others put in their bodies, then let's do it!! *Sigh* My point is...I don't care what you put in your body so don't worry about what I put in mine. Thanks government agency, but no thanks, I think I can figure out what is "bad" all on my own. |

| It may just be that they are trying to keep from being sued by someone claiming they did not know smoking can hurt you.By going with pictures you do not need to be able to read.I am sure the cigarette companies are makeing money,I have not heard of them shutting down in large numbers. |

| I loveElf, it is a lot of "lose"prevention" on behalf of the tobacco companies. They are learning from the fiasco here in the states and are attemtping to "cover their a** " so to speak. In fact I know that BT is also doing some R & D on the way the graphics are actually on the boxes, to provide both "pleasure" to the consumer, and cover themselves, but I can't comment on that to much, don't want to get the DH in trouble. He likes BT and loves going to Canada and I love his paychecks when he does! ![]()

| Ewww, that is gross! But if a government agency is footing the bill for someones health care, I think they should have the right to say take a little better care of yourself, taxpayers are footing the high cost. Now maybe if you have private insurance, you can do what you want, but as a smoker, I know I pay more in life insurance premiums. I'm not only talking cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, etc. The only thing I can't figure out is why they allow cigarettes to remain legal if they are so bad for us.(I smoke so don't get weird on me). You have to be 21 to drink but 18 to get smokes!

| Brad, you bring up a healthly and logical point to the argument. Canada has universal health insurance. Health and Welfare Canada pays funds to Dr.'s, Hospitals, nursing homes, and labs, directly to cover the ills of smoking. It is therefore HWC direct reponcibility to educate, in attempting to keep costs down. The US health care system is so complex the government doen't now how much smoking costs. Thanks Brad. |
