Chatter box SPEAKING OF KMART, DOES YOU KMART HAVE THIS NOW?

we have a "big kmart" and "super kmart" in our area, at the bigk recently, they have implemented a new checkout system, they have like 4 or 5 lanes where you can check yourself out....not sure if i like this one or not...i did use it once, i had layaway i got out and of course as i was walking back to the layaway department i came across some things i "needed" so after getting layaway, i only had 2 things i needed to check out so i decided to use the "self-checker"...it was pretty neat but i couldn't see if i had a big cartful of stuff how this would be convenient? also, ppl might take advantage of it...oh and also when i got home, LOL, opened up the plastic over layaway and found that they didn't remove the security tag from my coat! so i had to go back and do you know, the alarm never went off...weird...so no problems with the auto check out but the actual person didn't take the tags off LOL anyway...what do YOU think of self check out?

Thumbs up ahhhhhhhh great minds think alike tasker!

ya know, i was thinking the same thing, there is a big desk like right in the middle of these lanes where an employee is supposed to be monitoring the self-checkers, but of course i've never seen anyone there....i only had the 2 things (no sale or coupons) so i just went through it to get outta there quicker BUT i can't help but think by making it more convenient for people, they have actually made it more difficult...

oh by the way, did i mention that because of all the new self-checker lanes they only have 2 lanes that have actual employees working the register....WHEW you should see those lines, no one wants to use the self checkers ROFL!!

These "U-Scans" are very common here in Columbus. They are convenient for just a few items, but I wouldn't go through one with a cartfull. In fact, I think most of the ones here are equivalent to an express check-out line and have a max. number of items posted.

I absolutely hate these things! I had to use it once at kmart when there were like a million people in line, but I would never do it again.

I remember when our grocery store got these. They made a real big deal out of it about how it would be so convenient and much faster (it was stupid, they still had someone standing right there at the register to actually take your money, you just had to scan the crap and bag it yourself). Well, they had these things for about six months and then they were gone.

The worst part is that they kmart seems to use them as an excuse to have next to no one working the registers.

Many of our grocery stores have that now for people without coupons & with small shopping orders...kind of nice though 'cause you can see the prices being scanned since you're the cashier (versus having to watch the items being scanned to make sure they ring up on sale WHILE you're trying to bag your groceries and/or make sure your kids aren't beating the snot out of each other) whoops was I venting??? Chatter box Fry's has it where I live.

Our Fry's in my area (grocery store chain) has it and I love it. Use it even if I have coupons. Someone is standing in the middle of the aisle where you'd walk out after being in any one of 3 on ea side checkouts. If you need help they will assist. The screen even has a place to click if you need help. You are the cashier, no limit on items, and the aisles move very fast. I've used dollars with pennies and other change, credit, debit card and it's easy and fun. I wish more stores had this. No mistakes. And if you did scan something twice or made a mistake the helper is there to assist.

I just went to kmart last nite and noticed they have these check outs here now...
I was actually upset cause I passed by 5 lanes that have 2 of the check outs each. that is 10 (smart arent I LOL )j/k

Well I had a good bit of stuff and the store was crowded and I found 1 human thats it . To check out just 1. I was really upset and asked my DH "where have all the humans gone "
I was ok though when i went to the one human line , it was a friend of mine I hadnt seen in years

They do need more people to work the real registers. I will send that in a comment card to them.

I do not like the self checkers at all! I mean, it is like....hey...give us your money and we don't even have to put up with you at all! LOL I like service and to be waited on...checking myself out is very cold and tacky. Yeah, I know it is Kmart but they can still get a real person to ring me up with a smile! Not a lot to ask for...considering all the money I spend there.

Now, you know I had to jump in here !!!

We have four self serve lanes at our walmart...one employee monitors all of them. As a customer, I can't stand them, find them very impersonal. As someone who has worked as the "human" on them, it is very hard to help everyone at the same time.

They really are amazing machines, though. They "know" how much each product is supposed to weigh, so there should not be any "cheating". On our registers, a yellow light flickers when someone needs "human assistance". This is definately the wave of the future in retailing.

Steph, in the layaway, they probably deactivated your item on the way into lawaway, not on the way out as it should have been.
That is why you didn't set off the door alarms when you went out.

If you hate it, complain. (To the home office of any store, doing it at store level is useless !)

Happy Shopping !

We have them at the grocery store I use (Winn Dixie) and I love them. I like the fact that I can watch the prices as they are being scanned and catch errors. As I believe someone else mentions when a checker scans them I can't watch the prices, the kids, and unload my cart all at the same time. The ones we have also take coupons so I scan them myself and take cash, credit, debit, check, and you can also choose to pay a cashier. They do have someone to help you when you need help. Like when I catch something that doesn't ring up right. There is never a line at them which I love.

I LOVE THESE THINGS!

There is usually a big line at them but I love them. They are very convenient and sometimes the cashiers at mine go SLOW FREAKING SLOW! It is like JEEZ, speed up a little!

My big problem is....HALF THE PEOPLE USING THEM DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE THEM.

Not to be mean, but most of the people using them don't know English and they have NO idea what they are doing. Some lady stood there for 10 minutes confused, I noticed she scanned the same thing TWICE, but the clerk could not EXPLAIN IT TO HER, because the lady did not speak English.

Even if I am using coupons it is great. I usually try and only get a max of 20 or 30 things, and I love scanning...I can get it going real fast.

I just like them a lot - they take practice though! LOL!

-Matt

i hate the self serve checkouts!!! I refuse to use them its bad enougt in kmart that they don't even stock the shelves 90 percent of the time. The stuff is on pallets in middle of the isles shrink wraped togther that you have to dig thru to get what you want ad now you have to ring it up (if you find it) and bag it too !! NO WAY !! I'm wlling to pay a few penies more for service ans sinc walmart is just down the road with real people.. guess where I'll go. Last time I was there they had all 6 self serves open and one real person open with a l ine half way back int he store. Left my carriage with a ton of others and walked out. K-Mart is permanetly off my list.(Now maybe if they gave a discount for using them....)
