Did you ever use cloth diapers?

Cruising another chat forum somebody had posted a link to an auction on ebay for "used diapers." I went to the link, after reading some of the responses, expecting to find an auction for used disposables (it is ebay after all...ewwwww.)

Of course, it was for cloth diapers. But the people who posted their replies on the other board were all grossed out about "used" diapers.

Does this mean they didn't know the existance of cloth diapers? They never experienced the joy of getting up at 2 am to change a nasty diaper and getting hit with the fragrant aroma of a diaper pail? They never accidentally "parked" diaper pins in a waterbed? Or, better yet, the profound feeling of "I'm such a Great mommy" when you accidentally stuck the baby?

Gosh, I'm old

I had to use cloth diapers one time for about a week with my dd she had a really bad rash and I was one who changed diapers often but she still ended up with rashes often ...
So I went and got the cloth diapers and ohhhhh my goodness... either I did something really wrong or I didnt know what I was doing LOL

I had the biggest messes that week, the only part that helped us out was that we caught the messes quickly cause we had a family member watching over her 24/7 as she was on a heart monitor.
I tried the diaper covers with the cloth diapers and well then she got a rash on her legs to...

After a week I went back to disposables LOL I couldnt take it no more I know my mom used cloth with me and she said she "Never" had a problem I said "Ha I did" Guess I just didnt know what I was doing thats all I can chalk it up to LOL

I had to use cloth with the first two - disposables left a rash & it just seemed easier to buy everything once & be done with it. With our younger son, we started with cloth but the last 6 months or so we got lazy and switched to disposables.

And, with my niece (she lived with us from birth until just over one year), it was Pampers all the way - no way was I going back to the 3 or more loads of diapers a week

But, yes, I am the Mommy who did not hesitate to call Daddy when the really stinky poopy diapers were there - hey, isn't that what Daddys are for???

Not only did I use cloth diapers, I made my own. I bought diaper flannel and sewed and sewed. I am showing my age (my son is now 25). The disposables were terrible then. The legs were very loose and they were not very absorbant. The washing was easier than getting rid of the bulky (yes bulky) disbosables. The cloth diapers made great cleaning cloths when he got out of them. I think I even have one left.
And to make it even worse - when he was a baby I had to go to the laundramat-every other day.
Oh the memories.......

Boy you can say that again about how bad there were back then. For those of you too young to remember, they didn't even have the tapes, you had to pin through the plastic. After my son started walking there would be times that the padding would split and separate in the back so I'd find the plastic stuck to his little rump. Also, comparitively speaking, they were much more expensive back then. One diaper probably cost about 15-20 cents back then, at a time when salaries were much less than they are now. I just went to a nifty inflation calculator I have in my favorites and find that even at a minimum of 15 cents in 1974 equates to 56 cents in 2000, right pricey for what were pretty crummy products at the time. And kmarr you are also right about them making great cleaning cloths. I've got about four left from my daughter who is 25 now. They are still snow white and get used every week.

Well, I have to say I had a MUCH different experience with cloth diapers. I used a diaper service and these cool diaper covers. I just had to place a fresh soft diaper in the cover and velcro it on. I would shake excess poop from the dirty diaper and put it in the pail. No big deal at all. I really liked putting nice soft cotton on my son's bottom rather than paper and plastic and mysterious gel.

I'd do it again in an instant.

Kathryn, who misses having babies around

i loved cloth diapers, but then we didnt have todays disposables! i think the expense is pretty bad for disposables and i dont think we could have afforded them at the time. i can remember just throwing away a cloth diaper if the baby was sick at the time. that green stuff just WONT come out.....LOL.....i tabulate what disposables cost now and gasp at people paying those prices. i dunno, i guess im just cheap.

LOL.

I KNEW I could come here and feel better about it...lol. I remember making diapers too. One time the daycare decided they were going to switch over to all disposables, forcing all the parents to use disposables. After about 2 months, they switched back to letting us use cloth. The bulky, poorly made disposables caused more problems than the cloth...hehehehe.

My daughter is almost 22. The hospital sent her home in disposables, but I switched over to cloth immediately.

Funny. The same reason I chose to use cloth (I was poor) was the same reason I chose to breastfeed (cheaper than buying formula) LOL LOL.

Eek! Don't tell me I must be old too??? I'm only 26!! I can't be that old yet can I?? Sheesh... even I had cloth diapers on hand for my two kids and plan to keep them on hand for baby #3 that's on the way too. I never used them for anything other than burp rags/spit clothes, but it was nice to have them for "just in case" I ran out of disposables! Oh how I dreaded actually having to use them for diapers!! OH, by the way, the cloth diapers I had were also used!! Most were mine once upon a time , the others we bought at the Thrift Stores. The worn out ones have made great dust rags!!

I tried them for exactly 1 week! Disposables are by far a better choice!
