Children can help too!

President Bush was on TV tonight and at the end of his speech he had special message for the children of the US. He stated that there are many children just like them in Afghanistan but 1/3 ofhem are orphans and about half are malnourished.

He has asked for children here in America to send $1 to help the children in Afghanistan.

I listened to his address as well and I have to admit..the last part made me tear up. I explained to the kids what he asked and we'll be dropping a few envelopes in the mail tomorrow. I must also admit that I have never been a Bush supporter, but I give him credit for his way of handling this past months events.

Let me conclude by one final statement. Thank you all for coming.

Before we leave, I want to make a special request to the children of America. I ask you to join in a special effort to help the children of Afghanistan. Their country has been through a great deal of war and suffering. Many children there are starving and are severely malnourished. One in three Afghan children is an orphan, almost half suffer chronic malnutrition, and we can and must help them.

We've created a special relief effort that will be supervised by the Red Cross.

We are asking every child in America to earn or give a dollar that will be used to provide food and medical help for the children of Afghanistan. You can send your dollar in an envelope marked "America's Fund for Afghan Children" right here to the White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C.

This is an opportunity to help others while teaching our own children a valuable lesson about service and character. I hope school classes or Boys and Girl Scout troops, other youth organizations will participate in any way to raise the money to send to the children. Wash a car. Do a yard for a neighbor. And I hope the adults will help them as well.

Ultimately, one of the best weapons, one of the truest weapons that we have against terrorism is to show the world the true strength of character and kindness of the American people.

Americans are united in this fight against terrorism. We're also united in our concern for the innocent people of Afghanistan.

Winter is coming, and by acting today we can help the children survive.

My kids want to do this, but should a check be written, I hate the thought of sending cash, who knows where it will end up!! I mean thats a lot of dollars floating around!

i wouldnt worry about sending a dollar....theres so much expense on your end and receiving end if you write a check, it kind of negates the purpose of the gift. hopefully, the post office employees are mostly honest. i always put a sheet of paper around cash i send.

We are letting our son and grankids do this also, but they all want to send in their own envelope!

It is such a great thing to do.... I had each of my cousins do it... Of course I gave them the dollars though. They wrote letters to go with it. Too cute! My youngest cousin Stephen who is 6 wrote about how he hopes that they can use the money to buy pokemon cards so He can trade with them LOL!

That is sooo sweet! I'll be getting my girls' out Monday....finally. Okay, okay, I never claimed to be timely. So I'm a little slow, but they'll surely be on their way.
