What happened on the season finale of ER??

I was watching TV last night and a commercial for the season opener of ER came on and it was a chilling commercial. It was showing Dr. Doug Green in an elevator with a man on a guerney and he was holding up the shocker things that you use to revive heart attack patients...it was saying "You saw what he did" and he had this weird look on his face as he was looking at the patient. What did he do?? What happened?? Someone fill me in, please!!!!!
I used to watch ER religiously but missed most of the last season and quit watching it. Now I am interested in what happened so I can be caught up when it starts again. When does the season opener start anyway...anyone know??

IT WAS A LONG STORY, BUT THERE WAS A MADMAN GOING THROUGH THE CITY SHOOTING EVERYONE THAT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH HIS SON DYING. (POLICE, EMT'S ETC) THEN HE TARGETED MARK & ELIZABETH. WHEN THE MAN WAS SHOT BY POLICE AND BROUGHT TO COUNTY HOSP. FOR TREATMENT, MARK WAS ON DUTY. THE MAN HAD TO BE RUSHED TO SURGERY, WITH MARK IN ATTENDANCE, AND NEEDED HIS HEART"JUMPED" WITH THE PADDLES. MARK LOOKED AT THE GUY, HELD THE PADDLES IN THE AIR AND HIT THE BUTTON SO THE COMPUTER WOULD REGISTER THE ATTEMPTS, BUT HE DIDN'T PUT THE PADDLES ON THE GUY ( WHO LAYED THERE WIDE EYED). whew It should be on the week before the season's first episode.

Actually, I read that all the season premieres have been postponed a week so maybe this Thursday will be a repeat of that cliffhanger!

The man that did the shooting had his son taken away by CPS because of child abuse. He was very angry and wanted to get his son back. He actually went to the place that we thought his sone would be (a group home kind of place) and shot a few people there, including some kids. He then went all over the city shooting at various other medical-related people. He also shot the social worker that took his son. The police figured out that he was on his way to Mark and Elizabeth's house (who are married and have a daughter now in case you missed that). He ended up in the ER after an accident (I don't remember if he was shot or involved in some other kind of accident). He was worked on by the docs and then sent up for surgery. Something happened just as everyone was about to get on the elevator so they ran off. Dr. Green tried to hold the elevator but the doors ended up shutting with just him and the shooter guy inside. Before they got to the surgery floor, the guy goes into arrest. Green picked up the paddles to shock him, but just before he places them on the guys chest, Green looks the guy in the eye and takes them away from his body. He then pushes the button on the paddles to make them go off. The shooter is looking at Green with this "help me" look on his face and Green pushes the button again. The camera pans down to the read-out tape that runs tracking the heart rate. THat was pretty much it.

I am so glad I read this..I was sitting here trying to remember the cliffhanger myself..I could remember Friends season finale, but for the life of me the same didn't hold true for ER's..Thanks guys..for both the reminder and the warning of maybe them not showing it this Thursday!
