didn't mean

sorry, I didn't mean to say that returning or exchanging is bad......I just meant that with so many (and there are a lot who take advantage, I think there was even a talk show awhile back with that topic...Montel, I think) scamming, it ruins it for all of us.

I think Target is wrong for being so stringent, esp. in your case.
I personally have two turtlenecks that I bought over the week-end sitting in the bag, tags still on, never worn.......cannot find the receipt, so I have to wait and hope to find it before I can return them for the proper size.....and yep, I get mad when I think of the people who ruined it for me to do an easy even-exchange or return.

This Christmas is gonna be a treat.....my mother-in-law ALWAYS picks things out for my son that either do not fit, or are not his style (for awhile, I think she forgot he is a boy, lol). And her usual buying ground is Target, so I am praying she saves the receipts.

This also happened to me......I bought a small rug shampoo-er at WalMart.....got it home, and realized it was USED!!! There was still dirty water in it (just a little, but still!!) I knew when I took it back for another, they were gonna think I was trying to pull something over on them, but I was not. I was not going to plunk any amount of money down on something someone else had used and returned. Those are the people I think the policies should focus on, but I don't see how they can without it effecting all of us.

Again, sorry if it seemed I meant you were wrong ..... I am just not that great with conveying what I am thinking (happens all too much, I confess . )

Thumbs down

This stinks. I know Target was always one of the easiest places to return things! Sounds like their Customer Service people got too lax and now they are trying to make up for it! I can see not letting people return things that are old and used, but if something is still in the wrapper and they can re-sell it! Pul-lease!

I know you can ask for a gift receipt to give the person that won't show the price paid. But can you imagine doing your Christmas shopping there and asking for 10 different receipts for the presents you just bought? Talk about long checkout lines......

Sorry Guys...but....

K-mart is doing the same thing...I bought my daughter some new underware this week, and they told me, no reciept, no exchange or refund. So I don't know what's up. Wonder if Walmart is doing it too...weird

Then, I had the receipt needed and walked my butt up to the return counter and returned the defective movie. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hah! Hah! I am laughing right now because I had to do the SAME thing to return a defective radio my daughter got for her birthday. They are the ONLY store within a 100 mile radius of here that sells this particular radio, if not the ONLY store in the entire country that carries it. Come on... they had to know it came from one of their stores!! I took it back, complained it didn't work and the manager looked at me like I was crazy and said I could not even so much as exchange this radio without a reciept. I was very angry with him, mainly for the way he treated me. I took the broken radio out to my car and went back in and purchased another one. Stupid me didn't look at it until I got home with it and found that one was cracked all on the side and bottom (like someone had dropped it from the top shelf). So back that one went and I got another one, brought it home to make sure it worked. Then waited two weeks and took the first one back and returned it. I got an odd look from the lady at the CS desk - you could see I had already returned one. She asked me why I was returning it again and I told her it was the second one I had gotten that didn't work and I would rather buy a different brand somewhere else. No more questions asked and she handed over the money.

My neighbor works at Target, and she told me about their new policy about a month ago. And yes, it's true. Even if you have the receipt showing the price you paid, if it has been marked down, you will only get the lower price back. She said they were told that Best Buy and H.H. Gregg were also going to be doing this.

She said it was to stop people from doing things like buying a Halloween costume one day, their child wearing it for Halloween, and the day after Halloween, returning it for a full refund.

I told her that people were really going to be up in arms about this one, and she totally agreed with me that it wasn't fair.

By the way, Target does give Gift Receipts with every purchase - these only have a bar code that links the items to your purchase and will not show anything - prices, items, credit card numbers, etc. They are suppose to give them to you automatically with each purchase (regardless of what it is), but if they don't so it at your store, ask for one. The only downside to that is that you only get one per purchase.
Don't know if they changed the Club Wedd policy or not, but when I registered with them they gave us a card that entitled us to unlimited returns without receipts until a certain date.
I think this new policy is ridiculous too. They started this sometime over the summer here. I can't see myself not shopping at Target at all because of it, but I can say I will be more careful in what I buy and will probably buy less from them in the way of gifts.

One other store I know has recently changed their return policy (I believe they changed it on July 1) is Old Navy. It is still VERY customer friendly though, I think.
Returns with a receipt within 30 days gives full refund of purchase price.
Returns with receipt after 30 days is given merchadise exchange or store credit for original price paid.
Returns without a receipt is given a merchandise exchange or store credit issued for the current selling price. Store credits of $5 or more will be issued by mail and a valid ID is required.

Well this is gona be a bad policy for Target to have down here where I live because they are now in the process of building a Target down here and I can assure you with that attitude they are having their store will not last long here....

If someone gives you a gift that dont fit and you cant return it without a receipt well thats gona be a big problem ,,, Because some of these crazy cajuns down here will be picketing there store and going mad on them LOL
They wont know what hit them LOL
Then to think they are building their store less that 1/2 mile from our Super Wal-Mart which never gives you a problem to exchange anything.......

I never really shopped at Target much when I lived in Houston,Tx and I am sure I wont shop there when they build one here in Louisiana.......

It was explained to me that only clearance seasonal items were going to be effective by the return policy. If you return a seasonal clearance item you will only get the lowest price even with the receipt. So if you buy a regular item one week and return it the following week and it was on sale that week they will still return your money in full. It is to prevent people from trying to return clearance items for full price. However you do need your receipt! Heaven help me!....I started leaving all receipts in my ashtray of my car...that way if I meed to return something I can find the receipt.(of course this will not help if you smoke!) Joy

Hey hmsram,

Do you live in Lafayette? It sounds like it from your description. I can just imagine the trouble that Target will have around Christmas time when they put that policy into place. I know I certainly won't be in those lines after Christmas. Why do we need another Target in town, even if it is a Super Target? We already have three Super Walmarts, a Kmart, and a Super Kmart. And now they're building that Sam's between the Super Walmart and Super Kmart. And just what are they going to do with the old Target next to the Super Kmart? They can't possible operate two Targets that close together. It's really getting quite ridiculous!

This surprises me. I literally just got back from my local Target about a half an hour ago (Austin TX area) and I made several returns. One item I had my receipt for. The others I did not. I was able to return ALL items with no problem. I had used my Visa card, and got full credit back on all items on my Visa card. I was prepared to just take a store credit for the things I didn't have my receipt for, but the lady behind the counter just said, did you charge these items? I said yes, and she said to give her the credit card, and she could look up my receipt by using my credit card. And she did just that!

I know there are stores out there that require a receipt for all returns, but frankly I just don't shop at any of them. It is a big deal for me to be able to return things, since often I don't have time to try things on (clothes and shoes), or I'm not sure if something will be the right color until I get it home, etc. I try to save all my receipts, but I do occasionally lose some. I understand what the stores are trying to prevent with stricter return/exchange policies, but this would be taking it a bit too far. I wonder if Mervyns (also a part of the Target family) will be doing this too. As far as I've experienced at Mervyns, if you don't have a receipt you have to take the lowest price the item has been in the last 90 days or something like that. So if you bought it full price, but lose your receipt and try to return it, you would only get the sale price back, assuming it has been put on sale sometime in the last few months (which most everything has!)

Well, this is interesting......

The big problem I have with the return policy is about the only receiving the current clearance price even when your receipt shows a higher price. It's true that this only applies to holiday and seasonal, but that includes a lot of items, like the majority of clothes. Some items are considered holiday even when they don't look like it and you may have no idea they are. (Like the bodum gift sets, for those who remember).
Also, my mother stays sick a lot and often has to stay home in bed and can't go anywhere. She loves holiday stuff. This results in me usually buying tons of holiday stuff that I think she'll like, bringing it home, she picks out what she likes, I take the rest back. Also I buy her clothes and if they don't fit or if she doesn't like them I have to take them back. Target's new policy is going to cause this to be a real hassle for me. The receipt part is not that much of a problem, I'm really good about saving EVERY receipt. But say I buy something full price, next day it goes 30%, I try to return it and get only the current price. That would make me so mad.
I also hate the thing about getting store credit when you pay with check. Some stores do store credit it you try to return it in under two weeks, but after that you get cash back. I'm okay with that, but not getting cash after two weeks is just annoying.
I do plan on writing a letter to Target about this (if I can ever find the time!!!). I used to stop at Target every day or every other day. Within the last two weeks I've been to Target once. They are really losing my business. I spent hundreds of dollars there last Christmas. This Christmas I plan on spending none.

Ok. Just woke up a short time ago.

I do agree with most of the new return policy. You would never believe the items that people actually return. My store has received used clothing that has different brand names on it. Hand-made dolls. It is disgusting. I am not even going to go into some of the things people had the nerve to return.

When you shop at Target you receive 2 receipts. A regular receipt and a gift receipt. If you are giving a gift put the gift receipt in the box. It makes it easier for everyone.

Also I'm not sure if it is all credit cards or just the Target CC but you do not need a receipt if you purchased the item with your Target CC. Your purchase can be looked up that way.

There are also guests who go into the store, pick up a few items from the shelves and then walk to the guest service desk and return them. They never bought them in the first place!

I am going to have to check the policy with the clearance merchandise though. My understanding was that if it was a non-seasonal item that as long as you had the receipt you receive the price you paid for it. Seasonal items you woud receive the current price if it was after the holiday. I completely agree with that policy.

Do you know how many dirty santa lawn decorations are attempted to be returned on December 26th? Used Christmas lights? Its unbelievable.

Its a shame that the dishonest people in the world have caused Target to change its return policy but that is the case.

I know its hard to keep track of all your receipts... especially now that the holidays are coming around but as long as you have at least one receipt or purchsed it with a CC you will be fine.

Don't stop shopping at Target! I need to get paid so I can still keep up with all the deals you great people post!!!

Now I must startto get ready for another LONG nght at work Ugh!
