| ** CHARITY PROFILE - BREAST CANCER **
According to the National Cancer Institute, every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and every 14 minutes one will die of the disease. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55 in the United States and every woman is at risk. Breast cancer not only strikes women, but men as well, and though a much lower percentage of men develop the disease, some studies have shown breast cancer to be even more aggressive in men than women. The Avon Breast Cancer 3-day Walk is an annual event that raises millions of dollars each year to help fight breast cancer. In 2001 there are 9 different walks scheduled all around the country with 2,000 - 3,000 people walking in each. Participants will walk 20-ish miles a day for three days straight, totalling approximately 60 miles. You read me right. 60 miles. This is not your father's fundraising walk. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] You don't think you can walk 60 miles? Well, guess what? We're not asking you to. Two of our members, Kim Everett-Martin and Luvmetender (Daryl Morris) have already pledged to do it for you. On September 21-23, Kim and Daryl will be walking from Upstate New York to Manhattan, sweating, getting blisters, sleeping in a tent, showering in a communal shower, even using port-a-johns. Sounds like fun, huh? [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] While Kim and Daryl are doing the actual WORK (both have been training for months and are doing 6-8 miles a day now), they are asking something of you. To even be able to participate in the event, a walker must raise $2,000 in donations (this doesn't even include the money they themselves have to spend on at least 2 pairs of shoes, training clothes & gear, traveling to and from the event, lodging the night before, etc.) Kim and Daryl are hoping that with the big hearts of their DOD friends, they will be able to reach that goal and then some! Every little bit helps! You can pledge any amount - even just a few dollars - it will add up quickly! This is a tax-deductible donation. If you are interested in pledging.. please read the last paragraph in this thread. Kim's walker number is 1332 and Daryl's is 1408. Kim and Daryl are not asking for huge donations from you. Whether it's $5, $10, whatever. Your help will really make a difference. Kim, Daryl, all the walkers, and all the millions of breast cancer victims and survivors, thank you in advance! You can contact Kim via e-mail at [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]. Remember.. donations can no longer be mailed directly to Avon because it is too close to the walk-a-thon. You can, however, send a donation directly to Kim (contact her for her address) and make the check payable to Avon. If you aren't able to send a contribution.. no matter how small it is.. maybe send Kim and Daryl an e-mail of encouragement and appreciation for doing something good for such an important cause. And, educate yourself and others about this cause.

That's terrific. I have two girlfriends now on the end of their radiation treatments and it's because of research that they will be able to grow old and enjoy life. Here is another way you can help: The Breast Cancer Site was founded to help offer free mammograms to underprivileged women nationwide -- women for whom early detection would not otherwise be possible. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40 - 55. Early detection is the key to survival, yet 13 million women in the U.S. over 40 have never had a mammogram. With a simple, daily "click" at The Breast Cancer Site, you help provide mammograms to those in need. Mammography is the best-known method of early detection. And early detection is the key to a greater chance of survival and more treatment options. The Breast Cancer Site was originally launched in October 2000. Proceeds benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. so..... [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] Thank you. |
