Chatter box Need some gift giving ideas!

Dh and I are going to visit his college friend and I would like to take a gift for him and his wife. I was thinking of taking one gift for both of them but am not able to think of anything decent that a family might like as a gift. Any suggestions if I should take a gift for each of them or for them together or.........Any ideas? TIA

Oh I thought you were looking for something to get me.

Don't have any ideas right now. I actually slipped on some of Loca's spiked punch from the party. <that girl needs to learn how to clean floors...hehehe>

If I come up with anything, I'll let you know

Safe (and maybe boring) standbys:

Candles, candleholders, wine, vase, oranges & grapefruit (from your Florida home), picture frame with old photos from college days, basket of treats (crackers, candies, etc. to munch on if you are spending the night)....

I also thought of giving them wine.

I must be in party mode still.

I like the Candles, Candle sticks/ holders, and picture frame idea. I, personally, love those scented candles. If I were to buy one for a gift, I'd probably go for the Yankee candles in the jars just so I don't look cheap. I found an awesome Angel Food Cake scented candle in Bed, Bath and Beyond. That was a dangerous candle to get... I craved Angel Food Cake for weeks.
Picture frames, I think are a good idea just because I think a good picture frame is seems to cost so much these days. I just can't bring myself to pay over $5 for a picture frame. I would certainly welcome one of those as a gift.
Of course, that just what I'd appreciate getting. And the wife may enjoy those things, but would the husband?
Now food, that's a good idea too but you've got to be careful with that. We've gotten more Hickory Farms gifts sets with stuff we never even had the desire to touch in it. Maybe a plain 'ol cheddar cheese ball and crackers?

Good Luck!

First idea:

Send me the gift and I'll tell you whether or not I liked it.. and then you'll know if it's worth sending to them.

Second idea:

Whatever field of work your DH's friend is in (degree related), contact the University and ask to purchase a book dedicated to his children (if he has any) about his field of work (make any sense?) and the University usually sends a nice correspondence telling about the book... it will be a gift that will not only make a difference to those being educated at that institution but also be available for years to come.

Hmmm....I would go with a nice wine in a very pretty wine bag. Would work well in my house. I'd ask you back again and again....

Hey Loca...coming back into the party now.

I just thought of something else....a really nice plant is always cool too.

Another idea are those vinegars and what-not that have the herbs, peppers, etc. in them. They're pretty out on the counter or shelf in the kitchen and can actually be used, too!
