)the search terms I used were Vegetarian, Vegetarian Diet, Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore and only one article came up under the Vegetarian search that suggests, although not conclusive that there is no significant proof that a low fat high fruit/veggie diet has any effect on the reduction or prevention of cancer. Here is the link for that one [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or

A positive outcome would have suggested that a higher intake of fruits and vegetables is protective against polyp initiation; a negative outcome reveals little about the role of fruits and vegetables as they relate to cancer. Knowledge of the underlying biological mechanisms of the association between diet and cancer is needed to design informative clinical trials. This information is critical to avoid the testing of interventions at inappropriate time(s) in the disease process. In addition, researchers must remain alert to the possibility that associations with intake of fruits and vegetables can be modified by other factors, some of which may change as a result of enrollment in a clinical trial. Without adequate knowledge of disease mechanisms, the likelihood of detecting associations in a clinical trial is diminished. On a theoretical basis, the clinical trial is the criterion standard, but on a practical basis this standard can be tarnished." As I said it is not conclusive one way or the other.

Yep, Sheila...it is fun ![]() OK. Following your line of reasoning on beef...what about pigs? They are carnivores. So should we just knock out the middle man there too? And besides being carnivores they are also cannibalistic (I just added that as a trivia fact...not a part of the debate.)I think at this point, we could find experts to tell us nearly anything we want to hear. There has been so much research into dieting, nutrition, etc since the boomers are getting older. There's big money in it.

Loca, I buy healthy life bread which is 5-6 carb grams per slice. depending on if you buy white or wheat. it tastes great. the kids eat it too. its low fat as an added benefit. as far as the jelly goes, smuckers makes a sugar free! they use splenda or nutra sweet instead. its kind of like polaner all fruit. spreads a lot better than standard blobby jelly. i dont mean to cause problems, but margarine is "fake" food. this is taken from Dr Weil's website. Over the years, chemists worked on margarine's appeal by switching to vegetable oils and adding chemicals to make margarine more flavorful and easier to spread. As people became more conscious of the dangers of saturated animal fat and cholesterol, margarine makers shifted to polyunsaturated vegetable oils and touted their product as a healthy alternative rather than a cheap substitute. But guess what? In order to achieve that solid, spreadable consistency, margarine makers had to hydrogenate the vegetable oil, in effect turning it into a saturated fat. So you're not really getting much less saturated fat -- the kind that contributes to heart disease and stroke -- than if you were eating butter. And even though margarine is cholesterol-free, the hydrogenated oils will stimulate your body to make its own cholesterol. Dr Weil's opinion is, dont eat margarine or butter.....but butter is better if you must eat it. |
