Hey Gang! According to the National Cancer Institute, every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and every 14 minutes one will die of the disease. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55 in the United States and every woman is at risk. Breast cancer not only strikes women, but men as well, and though a much lower percentage of men develop the disease, some studies have shown breast cancer to be even more aggressive in men than women. The Avon Breast Cancer 3-day Walk is an annual event that raises millions of dollars each year to help fight breast cancer. In 2001 there are 9 different walks scheduled all around the country with 2,000 - 3,000 people walking in each. Participants will walk 20-ish miles a day for three days straight, totalling approximately 60 miles. You read me right. 60 miles. This is not your father's fundraising walk. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] You don't think you can walk 60 miles? Well, guess what? We're not asking you to. Two of our members, Kim Everett-Martin and Luvmetender (Daryl Morris) have already pledged to do it for you. On September 21-23, Kim and Daryl will be walking from Upstate New York to Manhattan, sweating, getting blisters, sleeping in a tent, showering in a communal shower, even using port-a-johns. Sounds like fun, huh? [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] While Kim and Daryl are doing the actual WORK (both have been training for months and are doing 6-8 miles a day now), they are asking something of you. To even be able to participate in the event, a walker must raise $2,000 in donations (this doesn't even include the money they themselves have to spend on at least 2 pairs of shoes, training clothes & gear, traveling to and from the event, lodging the night before, etc.) Kim and Daryl are hoping that with the big hearts of their DOD friends, they will be able to reach that goal and then some! Every little bit helps! You can pledge any amount - even just a few dollars - it will add up quickly! This is a tax-deductible donation - you can print a snail-mail pledge form here [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] or make your donation online here [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] Kim's walker number is 1332 and Daryl's is 1408 - be sure you choose the New York 2001 walk. The pledge forms ask for ridiculously high amounts (the boxes start at $150) but Kim and Daryl are not asking for that from you. Just choose "pledge any amount" and give what you can - whether it's $5, $10, whatever. Your help will really make a difference. Kim, Daryl, all the walkers, and all the millions of breast cancer victims and survivors, thank you in advance! Mayor

I've done this event twice now here in Los Angeles - as a walker in 1998 and as a volunteer crew member in 1999. I'm so glad Daryl decided to do this with me this year - I can't wait for September! It's such an important cause, and a great thing to know you're helping so many people. Anyone who pledges either of us - please send me an email and let me know if you're pledging in the name of anyone, or in memory of anyone. A lot of walkers wear shirts with all of their sponsors names & the people they're walking for's names on them and I think I'm going to do that this year.

FIRST....Thank-you both sooooooooo very much for doing this. Ummm...I sit here now with tears rolling because I too know how important this is to so many families...Thank-you so much..BIG *** HUGS to Kim and Daryl. I was wondering if the plans were still going well with you two meeting..YEAAAAA! Make sure to take oodles of pics. Love to both of you!Ok..now for some questions..will you both be able to keep track of the donations yourself to know if you've reached the $2000 (MINIMUM..hopefully you'll surpass that with ease)? Also, when is the date we can no longer make donations?? I want to try something at my hubby's job w/ our candle sales and it would be nice to know how long I have before it has to be "turned in"..thanks!

Mouse - you are such a sweetheart I love you!!! You have to have your minimum of $2000 by the day of the walk - there is a deadline for online & mail-in donations, which is generally just a couple of weeks before the walk. That way, they can get all of the donations tallyed up by the actual day of the walk. At sign-in the first day, you can turn in additional donations (cash, checks, pledge forms with ccs) and you can even get donations after the walk. But you have to have the minimum of $2000, either sent in or in your hand to turn-in, on the first day. Avon is supposedly sending out emails every week with our personal totals - I've only gotten one email so far, but I've only just started fundraising and gotten just a few pledges (including one from the mayor - thanks mayor We can also call-in at certain times during the week to check our totals, but it generally takes a week or so to process them (I'm sure the donations you guys have made so far probably won't be in our accounts until next week.)You guys are the best - you have no idea how much this means to us.

Kim, I made the donation, but the site has you listed as a walker in New York. Are you doing it there this year? If not, you might want to check into it. Everett - Martin, Kim 1332 Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day New York 2001 |
