My dog Madison (hence my name here) has really saved my life. Just over 5 years ago when I got her I was in a suicidal depression. From the second I got her, I started getting better as now I had something to live for. I had to get up to feed her, to let her out, to all around take care of her. Without me she would have died. I couldn't let that happen. Now, 5 years later, my depression (I'm Bi-Polar) is under complete control, I still have Madison and she still gives me more love that any puppy ever could. I do believe in God and fate and one or both of them knew I needed Madison, but also knew that Madison would need me too. I'm glad Madison and I have each other!

One of my favorite topics! My dogs are the best. Forgiving, snuggly, smart...I could go on and on. I used to feel sorry for people who had no more in their lives but their animals. Now that I'm one of them, I understand. My kids are grown, and I guess I just need someone (cuz they are human...just ask them) to take care of. Great Danes...like having a housefull of 4 year olds...lol.

Jeni - glad to hear you are doing so much better! There have been many many studies done about the theraputic benefits of dogs. They are the best - satisfied with whatever is dished out to them - all loving and all forgiving. We should all learn something from our doggies. There has been a tremendous branching out of dogs being used in many areas to assist in helping others, the obvious leader dogs, but they are also used with children who have been abused, in the elderly for visits - for depression, etc. Where is "lovemydogs" - I thought for sure she would jump on this one!!!!!

Thank you Tigger's Lady...I am doing quite well. Bi-Polar itself is quite managable with meds alone. Dogs are extremely theraputic though. I agree with Blue...the Pharmaceutical people should be jumping all over this post...hehehe btw, I'm an advocate for Mental Health awareness and support, if anyone has any questions or just needs a friend...I'm here

YES! We have a big cuddly black lab named Hershey. He is such a ham. Everyone loves him, even the UPS, mailman and FedEx people. And he won't even let them in the gate! Apparently, word of our dog and duck being buddies has spread through the neighborhood and beyond. People I meet say "Aren't you the dog and duck people"? LOL They tell me of driving buy and seeing the dog and duck laying together or playing. Black labs are so great. They stay puppies for so long. He is more than a pet; he is part of our family! I remember one of the saddest moments of my life: I was packing up and leaving my ex. I had to hide out with my daughter for a while and could not take the dog we had, Clyde. He had this hole in the fence where he would stick his head out to see people. So I was in my car trying to drive away. I swear it took me an hour in the driveway to leave him. I cried for days it seemed like. It was harder to leave him than my house or anything else! I known now you guys are convinced I am strange right? LOL

Here I am!!! You all know my thoughts already. Just wanted to add to JeniMadison, I too have had bouts of depression and the dogs are the greatest therapy!! The unconditional love is awesome. Sometimes the loneliness would be totally unbearable without them. Here is a cutie called "Why Dogs are Better Than Men" (no offense, Blue). ![]() Dogs do not have problems expressing affection in public. Dogs miss you when you're gone. Dogs look at your eyes. Dogs aren't threatened by a woman with short hair. Dogs feel guilt when they've done something wrong. Dogs don't feel threatened by your intelligence. Dogs understand what "no" means. Dogs don't brag about whom they have slept with. Dogs do not play games with you -- except fetch (and they never laugh at how you throw). Dogs are happy with any video you choose to rent, because they know the most important thing is that you're together. Dogs understand if some of their friends cannot come inside. Dogs think you are a culinary genius. Dogs are nice to your relatives. Dogs don't mind if you do all the driving. Dogs don't step on the imaginary brake. Dogs admit it when they're lost. Dogs don't weigh down your purse with their stuff. Dogs do not care whether you shave your legs. Dogs aren't threatened if you earn more than they do. Dogs mean it when they kiss you. You are never suspicious of your dog's dreams. You never wonder whether your dog is good enough for you. You can train a dog. You can force a dog to take a bath. Middle-aged dogs don't feel the need to abandon you for a younger owner. Gorgeous dogs don't know they're gorgeous. The worst social disease you can get from dogs is fleas. (OK, the *really* worst disease you can get from them is rabies, but there's a vaccine for it, and you get to kill the one that gives it to you.) ![]()
