I have been doing mystery shopping for quite a while. My biggest advice is to answer the questions as soon as you are done so you don't forget the details. The more often you take assignments, the more you are given it seems. I have one that I do about once a month for a restaurant and it is a nice excuse for my hubby and I to have a free meal without the kids but you only get $3 on top of the meal reimbursement. You certainly won't get rich being a mystery shopper but for a stay-at-home mom like me it's a nice excuse to get out once in a while!

I did it for a while about 5 years ago when I only had one kiddo and more time on my hands. It was fun, but the food ones are definitely the best, since you get a free meal, and compensation to boot. I hated the department store ones, where you had to go and find a salesperson to ask bogus questions to. As mentioned, you don't make a lot of money, but on the other hand if you like to shop a lot anyhow, I guess the compensation could pay for your gas!

| It's fun
I agree that the food ones are good (I only get reimbursement, never additional compensation). But don't do it for the money (I get about $200/yr doing about 1 shop a month). I think it's fun and not much work.

What companies do you go through? Any reccomendations? I have seen some listed on "mommy sites" but am not sure which one would be the best to sign up with. It seems like a fun thing to do. Thanks.

jgrunden, I have seen many sites also. I am being very cautious, though. I was approached by a company vp to do it in my area. I don't know where it will go from there but I am trying to identify and avoid any pitfalls.

I've been a mystery shopper with Jancyn for several months. I have done about 8 or 10 shops with them. They have all been at the same chain of Mexican restaurants. Around 2 or 3 weeks after the shop, they send my reimbursement thru PayPal. I am reimbursed up to a certain amount for the shop but don't receive any add'l compensation. It's kind of fun and you and a guest get a free meal. But you have to do an on-line evaluation within 12 hours or you don't get reimbursed. So if we do a dinner at 7:00 pm, they must receive the evaluation before 7:00 am the next day. I think they reimburse up to $45 for dinner, $25 for lunch and $25 for a cantina shop.
