| I'm trying to Move Greetings all, My husband and I are trying to move out from my family's house for the first time. We are both disabled and don't have much money. Since this is our first time on our own, we don't have much in the way of household things. We're going to need second-hand furniture, a microwave, lamps, clocks, a phone, and a lot of other things including dishes, pots, pans, washclothes, towels, and so much more. We are getting some second-hand stuff from my family but don't have so many other things. I was wondering, outside of rummage sales, where can I find certain household items at a fair price? I have already joined a Free Cycle list for my area. We're on a waiting list for our place so it may take months but I think we need it to get everything together. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mrs. J

Re: I'm trying to Move Hi, I was wondering if you by chance have a Salvation Army near you? Or Goodwill. These places actually help Many people who are in need of items. These Companies I mention are involved with people who have disabilities. We have many in the New England States.. I hope this helps some. Good Luck

Re: I'm trying to Move Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, those organizations you mentioned are pretty far from me. We can't really get to them unless we have someone drive us over an hour away and the only van that could take me hasn't been working in over a year. Thank you very much. Maybe I could find something online to do with those. I will have to see. Sincerely, Mrs. J

Re: I'm trying to Move When I first started out yard sales and thrift store is where I got things that family and friends could not offer.I went to the yard sales later in the day when sometimes you could get things for free because the people just wanted to get rid of things. What part of the country are you in? Some places have loan chests to loan disabled things they need till they can get their own.My first roommate in college was disabled but in many ways was more able than many of our classmates. She is the one who taught me to shop sales and clearance tags.I still can remember her spinning around in her chair telling me I had to see the price on something.

Re: I'm trying to Move I am in a rural area of Wisconsin. (North Central) If we do go rummaging, we'll have to "Walk" there or go on foot so it kind of makes things more difficult. We were going to go rummaging this weekend but it looks like it may rain almost the whole time. Thank you for your imput, Mrs. J

Re: I'm trying to Move We don't have that here, never heard of it in fact. But thank you for your suggestion! I do have slightly good news in the way that my mother got a couch for my beloved and I at a rummage sale for $25 and three kitchen chairs for $1 each. They seem very sturdy and all. You're all so pleasant here! Thank you, Mrs. J

Re: I'm trying to Move Glad to hear some furniture found its way home with your Mom. Walking to rummage sales does put a limit on what you can carry right away, I have let people on foot put things on hold till they have a ride but then I have lived with transportation issues myself. We are in AZ right now but DH and I are packing the house for a move. The kids know we might be moving.DH got us some land in British Columbia, Canada just in case we do not like who gets to be in the white house.Since who we voted for in the primaries did not count(AZ is a winner take-all state or is that a whinner take-all).Sorry if it bothers anyone that my DH and I do not like some of those running for office. We both feel it is easier if we leave the USA for four to eight years than stay and whine about who runs the country. Wish you were closer so we could help you more.

Re: I'm trying to Move I won't ask you about your political beliefs but, if I could get away with it, I would probably take a very long vacation to another place. (Maybe I just need one or maybe certain politicians are scary, not saying which ones.) My mother has informed me that the kitchen chairs probably aren't going to be the best thing for Brandon and I but it will be enough to start. My list is SLOWLY getting smaller so I suppose it is a good thing. How come bath towels seem outrageously expensive? lol If worse comes to worse, my mom wants to use her plastic to get us the rest of the stuff because people don't seem to get rid of good condition flatware and stuff. We'll have to see. I just hope it doesn't come to that.

| Re: I'm trying to Move My beliefs are more personal than political. With one it is that he left his first wife and kids to marry the woman he had an affair with then proudly parades his second wife and their kids(not his kids from first wife) around as his family.Another borrowed a speak almost word for word from a friend, when it was shown on TV and was asked about it, admitted that it was barrowed without credit but did not say he was sorry. If anyone kid or adult did that at school or their job they would get kicked out or in legal trouble. My problem is that I really want all of them to live up to to a higher moral code than they seem to want to live by.I vote based on how I feel about someone not what party they are in.I know Clinton is very human and has make many mistakes as well but I do not feel she is talking down to me like I feel with both of the others. She does not order $100 a pound cold cuts.Enough of my soap box.Back to finding stuff for you new place. Many things like flatware go on sale at back to school time for those heading off to dorms. When we started off I bought beach towels on sale till we had the budget for towel sets.I sew some so I cut apart two beach towels to make hand towels and wash clothes. We are not that fancy now days and we use more homemade stuff than store bought to be honest.DH made our kitchen table and chairs. Our lawn chairs the kids and I made out of PVC,PVC connectors, PVC glue and rope. My kids each have mesh chairs that are filled with old out-grown chothes(the pattern is the same os the ones that call for beans, plastic bags or styrofoam). They can be made out of any fabric but mesh was cheap and the kids love to see their old clothing(stuff that is too worn to hand down to anyone works best as they are softer) in their chairs. My SIL calls us eco-geeks she is the kind who buys only brand name. What kind of chairs did your Mom buy and what kind would work better for you and your DH?What is on you list of things you still need? Once our new place is accessable(Some of my friends have mobility issues so once we finish building our place will be chair friendly. I lost part of my lower right leg as a kid so some of my friends are fellow survivors) you can come for visit. We will be living out of the RV at first while we get things built and veggies planted. We are going to the west coast since they do not have issues with Americans buying farmland like some other places do. | Re: I'm trying to Move Warchild, Thank you very much for your reply. I haven't tried Big Lots but maybe I should. I found out some good news, my town is getting a Good Will in August so that will help for whenever we do get it. Thanks! |

Re: I'm trying to Move Dear Freefinder, We did manage to get a used microwave from a friend. I happened to trade him my old digital camera that I could never get to work right so it seemed a perfect fit. The chairs are vinyl and Chrome, not very stable. My mother said that we should probably get some wood ones. I need very sturdy furniture because it is hard on for me to get on and off of things. I wreck a lot of furniture. We still need flatware, a dresser for my dearest, towels, washcloths, lamps, dishes (including pots, pans, plates, cups, bowls, can openers, and things of that nature.) I don't have my list in front of me right now but there is sitll a fair amount of stuff. We should probably have another living room chair but may be at the end of collecting funiture for that particular room, thank goodness. Thank you for being there with me, in a way! Mrs. J

Re: I'm trying to Move On the vinyl and chrome chairs are they vinyl seats with chrome legs? Look to see how the seat attaches to see if it can be reinforced. If you rock in standing-up trying the legs of a chair to each other can help a chair last longer.
