Vacuum Recommendations?

Does anyone have any advice/input/recommendations for buying a vacuum? My mother swears by her Oreck, and I must admit that I have liked how light it is when I've used it at her house. They also have a model with intellashield technology to fight things like mildew, which is very appealing to a germ freak like me! Just wanted to get some other's opinions!

I have the Dyson DC07 Animal-I'm sure you've heard the raves but I'll tell you why I like it and you can decide if they are important to you.

It has a long cord-not having to unplug and plug in cord all the time.

The hose for doing stairs is long-no balancing the vacuum on the stairs. **added**I also like the hose for cleaning above my kitchen cabinets

The suction is amazing-I have used other vacs on a hard floor and some dirt gets in the vac and some flys out the back-not with the Dyson.

Drawbacks for me-It has such good pick up power I have to clean the roller brush more than other vacs. But-my carpet feels new again when I use it.

I haven't really needed the extra attachments that came with my vac. I use the ones that came on the vacuum tho-the typical attachments that come on most vacuums.

The Dyson is heavier than the Oreck though.

I have an oreck. I'd recommend it to anyone. It's been, by far, the best vaccuum I've had. I'd have a dyson if I had that kind of money, but until then my oreck gets the job done.

How much is the Oreck? I purchased a reconditioned Dyson so it was $380 a couple years ago.

Thanks for the great advice! I actually found out that Oreck is having at Holiday sale and offering 25% off on some of the Ultra XL models. Apparently they never have sales. Loving my Oreck so far! I only have to run it over an area once, so the time it takes me to vacuum is really cut down. Thank goodness, because I do not want to spend my life vacuuming!
