thanks for the heads up, I hadn't heard anything... we generally give our dog Iams & our cat gets Purina... but I have taken advantage of all the free coupons for Goodlife that have been out recently, thank goodness that wasn't on there

60 million containers of pet food recalled -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] 60 million containers of pet food recalled Store brands sold at Wal-Mart and Safeway tied to kidney failure, deaths Associated Press Updated: 21 minutes ago A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths. An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said. “At this juncture, we’re not 100 percent sure what’s happened,” said Paul Henderson, the company’s president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein. The recall covers the company’s “cuts and gravy” style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6. The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said. Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — [Only registered and activated users can see links. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness. “To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product,” Henderson said. The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said. Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada. Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million. chilla View Public Profile Send a private message to chilla Send email to chilla Find More Posts by chilla Add chilla to Your Buddy List Yesterday, 09:04 PM

Thanks so much for posting this! I usually keep up with the news, but I'm a slacker on weekends, so I missed this one. My cats eat Iams dry, so we're OK, but it's scary to think of how many pet owners may not even know to check!

Thanks for the post!! I never saw this on the news. I have printed off the list and am calling friends that may not have seen it as well. It is appreciated!! Luckily I feed my animals dry dog and cat food, so we have not been affected. I feel for all that have been...thanks again.

I know someone who's cat died out of the blue this past January!!!! She fed the cat only canned food from a brand that is on the list!! I told her she needs to call the vet tomorrow and see if the symptoms her cat experienced before her death is that of liver failure. This is just too sad!!!!

My sister's large dog has eaten a small amount of one of the foods named in the recall, but her vet advised her to bring her in for a complete blood work-up, just to be on the safe side. (Dogs are known to have died from this in the Phoenix area, according to local news.) Something tells me that animal practitioners around the country are bracing for many cases of kidney failure and emergency treatment. I hate even to suggest the possibility, but could there have been deliberate contamination involved? It seems awfully convenient that this still-mysterious event occurred at one of the largest pet food manufacturers in the US. In this day and age, nothing can be taken for granted. |

My dog and my sister's dog were eating one of the Iams recalled food on and off through March 9th. They both seem fine, no symptoms. I called my Vet yesterday and he advised a complete blood work-up and urinalysis just to be safe. I took the dogs in today and am waiting for results. What I've been told is by the time dogs start to show symptoms the kidney failure is already advanced. If the problem is caught early the condition can be reversed. I'd suggest anyone whose dog ate any of the brands see their vet. It's very scary, last time it was it was dry food killing dogs, now wet food. |

Tonight they are saying that it was NOT rat poison as was originally suspected. Also, they are saying some dry food was also affected now. I'm waiting to here what ones they are. Probably the previously posted links have updated lists now.
