Need ideas for friend turning 40...

We're throwing a birthday party for my friend that's turning forty on Saturday. I don't have much time to do anything elaborate, but I was wondering if you have some ideas for some fun decorations. We already have poster boards with pictures of her from her whole life. I thought maybe another board where people can write good wishes to her? She said she wouldn't care if we did "over the hill" so we told everyone (without her knowing) to wear black to morn the 30s passing. We also asked everyone to write some memories for her to either give to her or read at the party. What are some other fun things we could do at the party or use for decor? There will be about 30 people there.

My friend's husband turned 40 last year & she threw a fun party for him in the fall... she called it the "Party of the Decades" and guests could dress from any of their favorite past 4 decades. She had 4 families each make up posters of what happened in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's and threw in a few facts of her husband's after the posters were made up (we had the 80s!).

She also played a trivia game covering those decades and gave away some fun gag prizes, like albums, videos, etc etc.

His mom did a "this is your life" type speech and told of some fun memories, people & places in his life. And his sister put together a really nice power-point type program with the Beatles " In My Life" playing as the soundtrack as pictures of his life were displayed - not a dry eye in the house!!

When I turned the big "40", the best thing I received was a Tee Shirt. On the tee shirt was stated this:

"I Look Like "30"

"I Act Like "20"

I Feel Like "60"

I Must Be "40"

I still feel that was the best present I received. Because "That was how I felt!!!".

One of our friends turned 40, or actually a couple did. The cake was of course, dark chocolate, the frosting was black, we'd draped the room with pieces of black lace and also black tissue paper rolls - black balloons are cute if it's going to be an over-the-hill.
Music from her teen years is always fun and it's something usually just about everyone remembers. If you don't have it, someone that's coming will.
The other ideas are great too, and with all of it, plus your own, you'll have a great party - take pictures so you can post some here!!!!

Thanks for your responses (too bad I didn't post sooner about it.) The party turned out great. She had alot of fun. We did have black crepe paper and black balloons. The cake was chocolate frosting with black balloons which (unintentionally) made everyone's teeth turn black which was pretty funny. She really enjoyed the memories that everyone wrote and we even had a few people share their memories as well which was really fun.
