| Nobody cares (My English essay) I finished my English essay that I had as a homework. I thought that someone here on DOD just might want to read it so I wrote it up. Nobody cares We are living in the golden age of capitalism. The economy is booming; new companies are founded and people are shopping like crazy. According to the western logic people should be happier than ever, but the statistics are telling the opposite. An increasing number of people claim being unhappy. The future investigations revealed that most of the unhappy people were lonely, and they simply had no one who cared about them. A clear relevance was also discovered between high divorce rates and unhappiness. The much debated question, “what causes modern people to become so cold hearted” is still somewhat unsolved. Some analysts say that it's the violence shown in the television, others say that it's the overpopulated environment. Whatever the reason is, the trend of selfishness doesn't seem to be changing in the near future. In a worst case scenario this could lead to a down spiral of society where loneliness, divorces and suicide attempts become a part of everyday life. It is a well known fact that human beings are not meant to live alone. We are designed to care about our friends, relatives and family members. The caring is such a strong part of humanity that it can be counted as a one of our most primitive instincts. Yet increasing number of people have started to deny and block their instincts of caring. A change in people's way of thinking is needed more than ever.

| Re: Nobody cares (My English essay) Excellent hypothesis, Firetiger888. Very well put! I'm in agreement with your choice of topic and heartfelt overview of our society, in brief. Note to all: You will find that Firetiger888 is quite impressive. He never hesitates to inquire, when he is unfamiliar with any word, term or acronym of the English language. Nor does he hesitate to inquire, about the use and meaning of such. Common abbreviations, slang terms or adages (that we may all take for granted), are not ignored and don't slip by him, either. If unfamiliar, you will find that he pointedly asks, because he sincerely wants to know. ![]() |

| Re: Nobody cares (My English essay) It got me thinking too. I recently read a intersting story called the "Clothesline Gazette" out of "Looking Back" magazine from 1975. It talked about how the clothesline made neighbors communicate and was like a newspaper for the neighborhood. Whether there were new baby clothes on the line to "announce" a birth, a over abundance of pajamas and sheets let them know someone was sick, new linens let everyone know there was a new bride in the neighborhood. These are just a couple. It ended this way- "Within the last 25 years, the Clothesline Gazette has folded as neighbors learned to depend on machines rather than people." | Re: Nobody cares (My English essay) I want to thank everyone for the positive feedback. I was suprised how well flash3992 understood what I wanted to say. As already mentioned, the diamond of the essay is: Today the world is more "me" oriented. I remember reading an article about a old man who was found dead from his apartment. After the authorities made some recearches to the body, they came in a conclusion that the man had been dead for 6 months! If I remember correctly, he was found by a fire alarm inspector. Why? The old man simply had no friends, or relatives that would have been in touch with him. I am 100% sure that nobody in this world wants to die alone like this poor old man. coffeebeaned: your little "Note" made me bulsh. Thanks ![]()

Thank you for your comment. I read your essay, formed an opinion, and posted. You seem to be a very level headed, sincere, person that would not hesitate to offer anyone in distress help. I really hope you got that "A" . You earned it.
