True,
RIP as well. There will be a news conference today, (ok, I forgot what time though!) on TV today. Thanks for posting this!

I will always remember Ford as the "Commuting President". After Nixon resigned, Ford was not allowed to move into the White House for a couple months by Al Haige and another Nixon Loyalist named Cheney. You see, a Presidential resignation was unprecedented, so no one knew what was the correct protocall. Ford was commuting from his home in Alexandria.

This was one of the reasons the Vice Presidential mansion on Observatory Hill was built. But alas, it was not be completed untill Mondale was in office.

While Ford was commuting, Al Haige was trucking everything out of the White House that had any possible connection to Nixon. Trucks were loading all through the night. Ford wanted to know when he could move in, but only got vague answers from Haig. It was not till later that Ford realised the White House was being robbed blind.

Oh, Haige was putting so much pressure on Ford to pardon Nixon, his wife Betty finally put a stop to it by not allowing Haig and Ford to be in the same room together, unsupervised.
