James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured "Godfather of Soul," whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.
Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said.

Re: James Brown Dies @ 73

I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Brown twice and actually meeting him once. I even had the pleasure along with 1800 others to see him as he was tributed by his nation after recieving the Kennedy Center Honor back in 2003. I remember him, so happy sitting in the box with 2 Presidents (one current, one former), and the other Honorees Carol Burnette, Mike Nochols, Loretta Lynn and Itzhak Perlman.

Mr. Brown was tributed by Danny Akroyd (an old friend), Brian Mcnight, and Yoletta Adams. The show stopper, literally, was the closing number of the program when Wayne Brady, with an all star cast of probably 60 people including Garth Brooks, appeared on stage and sang "Living in America".

Looking up at the box, I could see even our then Sec of State was boogie-ing.

You earned my respect, Mr. Brown.

No doubt he was a giant in his field, but didn't he (allegedly) beat his wife? I can have no respect for someone like that.

Freedom Lover ... do you mean Dan Akroyd is an old friend of yours or of James Brown? Cool if he's your friend. He seems like a nice guy.

Danny was a friend of Mr. Browns. We have never been formerly introduced. Before the Godfather of Soul waled into a room, his handlers would show up a few minutes early and instruct the crowd to only refer to him as Mr. Brown. Anything else was unacceptable. All Mr. Brown ever wanted was respect. Disrepectfull people were not tolerated.
