Aveeno makes some great products for dry skin. They have lotion, body wash, and oatmeal bath stuff. It worked great for my kids when they had the chicken pox, it really seemed to help their itching. Its kinda pricey at Wal=mart but it works great on dry skin!

| hello elizabeth (he he)
my son has severe eczema and the dermatologists all prescribe cortisone cream. I use it when I get really itchy too! I bet your doctor would call something in for you if you're that uncomfortable! Otherwise, you can buy 2% cortisone over the counter which might also help! Liz

| I can sympathize!!!
Do you have a humidifier on your heating system? We don't and the air gets so dry in the winter. That's when my itchy skin starts and our cocker spaniel's skin goes nuts too. I did notice that the itching stopped when we had our plug- in vaporizer/humidifier on when we were sick last week. I know that's an expensive option but I have tried everything and until we turn the heat off- very little helps. The worse is this spot in the middle of my back that I can't reach. It drives me insane!!!!! Try not to take very hot showers or baths. That triggers the dry skin. There is a vitamin that helps- is it E? Merry Christmas!! Traci |

lectric~ If it's just from dry skin, try this. When you get out of tub...pat dry...then rub baby oil all over. It makes my skin so soft. I get really dry skin in the winter and this helps immensely. When I was 18, I had psoariasis till I was 23. Oooohhh..it was terrible. Lucky me, haven't had any trouble with it since then, except for teeny patches once in a while. I know they say not to take hot baths or soak in the tub, but I can do both(I can stay in the tub 2 hours..running MORE hot water..while reading LOL)since I use the baby oil. I use the generic brand. The other costs way too much.

I've had that problem for years, especially on my hands. It would get so bad the skin would crack open and hurt. I do have a prescription cream to use when I need it but two things that the doctor recommended and I have used ever since are Basis sensitive skin soap (not the Basis clear complexion bar) and Nutraderm lotion. They are more expensive than most other brands but they have really helped me. |

Sometimes if you have hard or soft water that makes a difference too. Have you tried using lever 2000 soap? I used it in Minneapolis, they had very hard water...and it worked well. I had the same problem when we lived in Chicago...horribly dry skin. I would put vasaline on my hands it was so bad. Geezzzz, the things we have to go thru. I agree with the humidifier, if you open a window a touch..that will help, also putting a bowl of water, with some newspaper that has been rolled or squished togeather to make like a wick, then put part of the newspaper in the bowl, part out...then that will put moisture in the air. My friend did it in Chicago, worth a shot. Worked for them.

The worst thing that you can do when you have dry & itchy skin is to take really hot showers or baths. This depletes the moisture in your skin and therefore you itch. I know this may sound a little gross to some, but try not to bath or shower everyday in the winter months. Every other day would be better. But to at least keep yourself feeling "fresh" and not "ripe" just bath your "necessary" parts by using your bathroom sink and a gentle soap like Ivory. Also any soaps or lotions that are perfumed shouldn't be used either. Hope this helps you to stop scratching.

I had to laugh after reading these posts. Tonight I was itching so bad on my legs that I finally asked hubby to get out the sand paper! OK, so it's not a solution, but it sure feels good! LOL.No humidifier here either and my skin gets really bad in the winter. For hands that crack open,Vaseline before bed helps alot, especially if you can go to sleep with a pair of cotton gloves on.My hands are so dry I caught myself rubbing shortening into them tonight while baking cookies! Don't ya just love winter? LOL!

My son swears by this itchy skin remedy. He takes several of the large lipton tea bags, dips them in warm water, and rubs them over his skin. Something in the tea seems to help with the itching. They are also good for toothaches. Just place a tea bag on the painful area of the mouth. |

My son too has the "itchies" he's 3 and started to break out. Thought it was the laundry soap, fabric softener, and finally thought it was the new body soap we were using...tried everything then remembered our daughter had done the same thing in the winter and got out the Eucerin cream and humidifier and now his skin is clear again! Put a big gob on and rub it in a little and let the rest kinda soak in...looks gross but it worked for him. We use a small humidifier in the bedroom and run it at night. (those arent too expensive) Hope you feel better!
