My handmade knife

I finally felt like hosting some pictures of my handmade knife. I have made it 3-4 years ago in school. I also made a knife holster.

The knife

Materials:
Cherry three - very hard and nice colored
Reindeer horn - incredibly hard white bone
Leather - used to separate parts and make the handle more stiff
Iron blade - the only thing I bought

The handle is made out of cherry three and reindeer horn (the 2 white parts are reindeer horn). Between the cherry three and reindeer horn is piece of leather which makes the connection stiff. After cutting and glueing the parts together, I used special saw and sand paper to shape the handle. When everything was done, I oiled the handle with a special mixture of oil and tar.

The holster of knife is leather. Inside the holster there are thin wooden layers protecting the leather from the sharp knife. You can also hang the knife to your belt.

And now the best part... pictures

I know this is little offtopic but I can't help it. Few weeks ago we got 2 new cat's. They are so cute . This one is called Totoro (from the "quality" anime)

This is Yuki. Yuki means snow in Japanese, which is kind of ironik

Re: My handmade knife

Hi,

Wow, your knife is incredible! Was that your own design? That's really talented work you've done. Beautiful!!!!!!!!
And your cats? Awwww, cats are never off-topic to me! LOL We've got two as well, your second one looks a little like one of ours, except ours has some other colors in her, and I love the way they sleep--wish I could get that kind of truly relaxed sleep!
Thanks for posting these!!!!
Kat (Kat, um, cat lover too!)

Re: My handmade knife

Yup... I designed it by my self.

Back to the cats. Check Totoros forehead. To me it seems like there are letters OM, shaped from his stripes. Can anyone else see it?

I call him sometimes OM-chan ^^

Re: My handmade knife

Thats a beautiful knife! There is a man in our area that makes them out of white tail deer horns. He also does a great job!

Kitty cats are adorable

Re: My handmade knife

Nice job on the knife and holster! How long did it take you to make it?

Cute cat My cousin had a friend in school who's name was Yuki. She was Japanese but had natural blonde hair. I never knew what it meant so that is ironic too.

Re: My handmade knife

It took about 3-4 weeks I guess. I only made it when I had school lessons (I did not use any freetime). Now I don't have anymore that subject .

Re: My handmade knife

No. So far it has been my first and last knife. Right now I must consentrate on my school. The final exams of the last year high school aproach... "glup". I also don't have the right tools to make one. Talking about school, I will go now to read some chemistry.

Re: My handmade knife

Ohhh, what sweet kitties!

Your knife is beautiful; a work of art! This will surely be a family heirloom. You mentioned that you used leather between the reindeer bone and the cherry. Is that what the 2 thin little stripes are? And do you use it because you can't glue the bone to the wood, but you can glue the wood and bone to the leather? It really is gorgeous, and you can certainly be proud!

Yup you got it right. One reason why I used leather between the parts was to get the parts more tighter. After oiling the knife (and the leather parts as well), the learher gets thicker making it even more tighter. The glue is also more effective when leather is being used.

Thanks for all these encouraging comments ^^

Your knife is very pretty. I think you did a very good job in making it.
Your kitties are very cute, I wish I could have one but I'm highly allergic to them...
