My kid decided I needed a haircut!

So, last night after dinner, I took a well-deserved mom nap on the couch, TV blaring and the lights on and all. It seems during that time, that my DD decides to take the kitchen scissors and snap a chuck of hair right next to my left ear. The odd crunching sound and click of metal made me nearly jump out of my skin. Before I could even open my eyes, I heard the most sheepishly laugh and as I rolled over I saw a good eight-inch group of hair in my DD’s hand. At first, I thought it was her own hair that she cut, but when I saw the golden brown color, I knew whose it was. I rose up quickly and checked my head and when my fingers moved around my left ear, I felt the coldness of my skin. I ran to the mirror in the hallway and saw that the three inch wide wedge of hair that had been cut crooked right next to my ear. My hair was about 16 inches long, just touching the top of my chest, so the eight inches that were missing were REALLY noticeable. I just shook my head and sighed, since really there isn’t anything I could do now.

I kneeled down next to DD, snatched the scissors from her hands, asked her in a strict tone why she did what she did. She said that she wanted to give me a cute haircut and wanted to surprise me. So, at that moment was trying to suppress my rage, since I knew that she didn’t mean it. I explained to her that I wasn’t one of her dolls that she could cut hair on, that it wasn’t right for her to ever touch someone else’s hair without their knowing about it. I did my best to tell her that hair takes a long time to grow out and when you cut it, it will take even longer. She said that she was sorry and wanted mommy to have long hair again, but again I had to tell her that I won’t be able to have long hair because of what she did. She hugged me and then I sent her to bed.

Back to my hair, the worst part of everything was the fact that I was trying to grow my hair out. I hadn’t cut in like four years and this is the longest I could get it. I am not mad about cutting it, I have had bobs and pixies in the past, so I know that my face looks good with short hair. Not like it’s really a big deal, since I am a stay at home mom and the only one that I really care about looking good for is my DH and he always founds me sexy in the dark. The only thing was that is a little traumatic cutting all that hair off. I’ve never done something like that like before. The most I’ve ever cut off at one time was about four inches. Since all the salons were already closed that night, I at least had time to brace myself. I also had time to think about what I was going to tell DH when he gets home in the next two days.

So, today I woke up and got ready as fast as I could, I put my hair in a ponytail and threw on a baseball cap to cover the patch and grabbed up DD. I drove as fast as I could to Fantastic Sams. I didn’t care anymore, because it is just too weird trying to sleep with part of your hair missing. I arrived at the salon just a complete minutes after they had opened, so I was the only one there. The only stylist there greeted me and walked me to her chair. I slipped into her chair, which the vinyl was freezing, making my bare legs a little comfortable. The stylist then draped me in a black hair-cutting cape, which also felt like it had been dipped in ice, but it was no bother, because I have always really liked the feeling of nylon against my skin. So, after she put the cape on, she didn’t say a word, but just gave a look, like she knew there was something wrong under my baseball cap. She took it off and laid it on the counter, letting my hair down. Instead of asking me what I wanted done, she stood there examining my hair, until she saw the chuck that was missing. She exclaimed that she knew that there had to be something wrong with my hair, because she has yet to see a woman walk into the hair salon with a baseball cap on that didn’t have problem. I gave her a shy smile and told her that my four-year got a little too crazy with the scissors and decided to give me a haircut. She was really caring, patting me on the shoulder, and telling me a haircut doesn’t change the love my daughter has for me.

After we talked a little, I told her that I wanted her to cut whatever she needed to make it look even, but try and keep as much as possible, though I knew it was going to have to be short. After I saw the point of the scissors in her hand in the mirror, I just had to close my eyes. She took her scissors and just cut a large portion of my dry hair. I didn’t see it, but I sure felt it from the moment that he left my head to the second that it touched my shoulder and when it slide down the cape, making a whooshing noise as it went down. She continued to cut, telling me that she was just doing a rough cut for right now to get some of the hair out of the way. I felt more of my hair on the cape, even though hair is light, it gets heavy after it starts to pile up in large mounds! Something in me told me that I had to open my eyes, but I didn’t have it in me to see myself in the mirror, so I looked down…and all that I could think of was Ahhhhhh! The black cape that covered my sexy runner’s legs looked like a bunny had been slaughtered, tuffs of honey-brown hair laid all over, clumps longer than my hand massed on my knees as smaller bits of hair was scattered in my lap. After seeing the hair in my lap, I started to feel like I was being sheared. I had to bite my lip to calm myself. To make it easier on myself, I took my hand and pushed up from underneath the cape, dumping the lot of hair over the side of the chair, so I didn’t have to look or feel it anymore.

The stylist finished the cutting, and rubbed her hand through my hair and boy did it feel short and that was only the beginning. She stopped cutting and started spraying what was left of my hair with water. She combed and pulled my hair into sections and trimmed it up to match it up with the missing patch. This time, the bits of hair that came off were tolerable to take. She then took out the buzzers and trimmed off some of the wisps of hair around my neck, since it was so short now. She dried my hair in like two seconds with the blow-dryer and put some styling mousse in it. The stylist did her best to style it into something cute, but at this time my eyes were wide open. I have a bowl cut now. I have hair that starts at my eyebrows and follows all the way around in one length. I look like a five year old boy and feel like a ninety-year-old woman. She dusted off the stray hairs around my neck with the duster and unsnapped the cape and swung it off of me. I slowly and uneasily rose from the chair as I did she asked how I liked the haircut. I told it was a nice haircut for the summer and that is all that I said. I grabbed my baseball cap and DD’s hand, which had watched most of the trauma. I paid and left, when I got far enough away, I slammed that baseball cap right back over my head.

On the drive home, I told DD that my mommy had to cut all of that hair off, because what she did. I also told her that mommy wanted longer hair and now can’t have that and she knows how it feels when she can’t have something that she wants. I love my daughter, but I really hate this haircut.

Re: My kid decided I needed a haircut!

Hi,

Oh my, you have a very "inventive" daughter! Take heart in this; a hairdresser told me that when you get your longer hair cut very short, it tends to grow back much faster.
And, once I realized that the summer was going to be really HOT here, I did something worse than your daughter--I washed my hair, it was pretty long, and took a tie, tied it back (short) and asked my husband to get the scissors and just "get it off of me" where the tie was - he did, and let's see, that was about a month ago? My hair is down over my shoulders already! So, it does grow back fast. Course, it's gotten hotter out, could I borrow your daughter?
Seriously, you will laugh at this "someday", and in the meantime, your little one learned a very valuable lesson. Don't mess with Mom's hair!
Hugs,
Kat

Re: My kid decided I needed a haircut!

What an ordeal. Sorry you had to go through that. I have long hair, so I know how you were feeling about growing it out. I would hate having the 'bowl haircut'. I don't go to any of those cheaper haircutting places like Super Cuts because it seems like the hairdressers are just out of school and don't know a whole lot. One time I asked the gal to blow dry my hair straight (it was frizzy at the time), and she did not know how to do that!!! Sheesh.

Anyways, I had a thought. You could try something like Jonathan Dirt, which is a styling product that people with short hair seem to love. Then you can piece your hair out to give it some modern definition and a little edge. I heard that some Costco's have it now. Normally, it's like around $20 or so for the little jar, but I hear it lasts a long time. I'd sure try that if I were you.

You need to take a picture of you and your daughter now ... so you can hold this against her for years to come!
