Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

One of those vacuum ones? I bought a Tilia and have to say I love it, the bags are kind of expensive, but you can get off brands that work just as well.

I buy a lot of stuff in bulk, and when I used it for meat, and then took that meat out to cook two months later, it was just as fresh as they day I bought it. It also works great for coffee, since I only drink about 2 cups or so a day, if I buy a large can of ground, it would always be stale before I could use it all.

Re: Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

I have a FoodSaver, too, and I love it. I use it a lot since I shop at Costco, and I especially love it for sealing up portions of meat and also leftovers. (I freeze leftovers or juicy stuff first ... then seal them ... so the cooked foods won't be crushed and so any sauces or juices won't be sucked out into the FoodSaver.) I wash my used bags in hot soapy water, rinse well, then thoroughly dry them so I can re-use them over and over. There are so many things that can be sealed, you just have to use your imagination. Have fun with yours!

Re: Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

I LOVE my foodsaver. The bags are a little pricy, but they are reusable as long as you wash them out well and they have no holes in them. I can usually get 2-3 uses out of a bag. I'd hate to tell you how long some stuff has been in my freezer since I got the thing, and they still taste as fresh as the day they were put in.

Re: Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

Most Wal-Marts and Targets carry them, plus you can find them online. There is a new out from Black&Decker and their vacuum sealer and bags are a little cheaper.

I do not reuse my bags, plastic holds way too many odors and germs, and just the thought gives andywon a heart attack.

Re: Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

We have one and also wash the bags out unless they have been used for raw chicken. We wash them right away in hot soapy water, rinse well, shake out good and put them into the freezer so bacteria cannot grow. We also use a lot of the quart and gallon canning jars with them. Look for one with a jar sealer telos2000, it comes in handy.

Re: Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

DH bought one years ago while watching late nite shopping tv ...We used it alot when we first got it. Now he mainly uses it to seal his beef jerky after making it. When I buy bags I go to walmart and buy them there. Even though it is not the name brand of the unit the bags still work fine with it, and are much cheaper than the ones that come with the sealer.

I don't use mine a WHOLE lot, but I wouldn't be without it!!!!!! I love the darn thing...I have also used it for shipping packages..LOL! I can fit a larger item in a smaller padded envy that way I do the same as hmsram (above quote)...I don't buy the cheaper bags and have never had a problem (knock on wood).

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh I agree! I love using it with canning jars (not for canning mind you)...We don't drink coffee at a REALLY fast rate, but I put some of it in a big canning jar and seal it until we're ready for it. I also use tha jars to marinade...saves on using a bag

Re: Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

I use mine a lot to seal my coffee as well, usually it is cheaper to buy a large can, but it will be stale before I drink it all, if I don't have company, I drink only about 2 cups a day myself. So I put most of the can in a bag, seal it, then cut open and reseal as needed.

Re: Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

I have one. We use it a bunch. We also do a lot of bulk buying and it saves us a fortune with the ability to repackage. I reuse my bags. I use scalding hot water, dish soap and some bleach. This way I know I have killed all germs and oders. I also hand dry with paper towels immediately so that no water gets trapped in the corners.

Re: Anyone else have a foodsaver thingie?

Ever since Oprah said it was her favorite gadget I've wanted one. Now all of your testimonials prove it to be a good investment. My next move will be to find a good one at a bargain price.
