You don't have to be a king to travel. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] is an awesome website and travel magazine. Southwest is usually the cheapest and most reliable domestic airline. Virgin to London has great airfares and packages, Lufthansa to the rest of Europe, British Midland within Europe, Eurail website and 800 # is a disaster, go thru AAA or another travel agent, Hotels Super 8s in the US, Formule and Ibis in Europe (Ibis is on a building spree in Paris and driving down rates), smarterliving.com and Consumer Reports Travel Letter are really good sources of info and deals,Italy is really cheap right now because of the Euro, conversely London is a ripoff, the airfares are good but once you get there its expensive British pound is strong, use public transit inst of taxis, esp in San Fran, NYC, Chicago, and all of Europe. Stay at cheaper hotels on the subway line into town. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Something that my husband and I do (and we can do this since we usually just drive)is get rooms through Priceline.com. We have been able to get rooms for 25.00 a night, and if you're staying a while, it's a really great deal! We've gotten some really nice rooms. In Denver, we even got a room for 22.00, and the lady across the hall said she paid 98.00 for her room (same room). Just a thought.

I have mixed feelings about priceline. from what you're saying it works good for hotel rooms. Basically like any other auction, it works when you know the value of what you're bidding on.
For plane tickets, you only save $25 on average. In exchange for this $25, you have no choice of time, connections, or which airline. I have used it in certain circumstances.
For plane tickets, 1travel.com has a "white ticket" program. You don't know which airline, but they tell you approx times and they do disclose connections. Its not an auction. They have some good prices and they usually use major airlines. (Usually you can figure out which airline anyway just by the connections). I don't care which airline anyway because I haven't overly accumulated miles on any one airline.
