Talking Back from Camp!

It was a great week but it was sooo nice to sleep in my OWN bed last night. The kids were fantastic. They all signed my camp shirt with goodbye messages. It made the big guy cry!

The last night of camp, we sit in a circle (we took 64 kids and that makes a big circle.) We then give a Magic Marker to one of the kids to start things off. They go to a person who has inspired, comforted, or otherwise been helpful to them in camp and put a cross on their right hand. They tell them why they were chosen. Then that person goes to someone else. No one can be chosen twice.

One of my boys (who comes from a rough home life, has anger issues, and does not trust adults) came up to me and marked me. He told me I was the only adult he could ever talk too as a friend and that he respected me very much. Okay! The big guy broke down in tears and gave the little guy a big hug. It was just one big tear for me from that point on. I know him pretty well, and that was one big step he made!

I am going to miss all my kids! I just might have to find a way to go back next year. Or maybe I am meant to get a new group of kids to work with.

If you ever get the opportunity to go to camp with kids, go! It will bless your socks off if you can quit being a parent and become a friend.

Re: Back from Camp!

How wonderful, you must be one great guy to put up with that many kids at once. My DH went to JROTC camp at the first of June. I was also going but couldn't get anyone to fill in for me at work or take care of the dogs. (excuse) Studies show that children who go to camp learn so much about how to deal with peers, etc. I bet you had a wonderful time!!!

Re: Back from Camp!

I know exactly how you felt, and also how the kids appreciate someone like you! My brother was a camp counselor at a similar camp for many years and loved being with the kids and helping in any way he could. Some of these kids had never been out of the city, let alone away from home. I commend you on your great service.

Re: Back from Camp!

You know, it is really a blessing to be with these kids. It really doesn't take someone special, just someone who will go be real with them. I am no different and I really hope ya'll know that. It is hard for me to accept kudos, especially when I know I could do more. I give a week a year while some people devote their whole lives to these kids. They are the ones' who provide a great service.

Yes, my son goes but he didn't go this year. This is my last year with this church since I resigned. My son did not want to go and I respected his request. It would have been too hard on him.

Ya'll need to try this sometime. Just once and your life will be changed.

Re: Back from Camp!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh how awesome.
DH went to camp last year with the oldest DS. He and another guy were the "guardians" of one group. He said it was absolutely tiring, BUT totally loved hanging out with the kids. One thing he couldn't stress enuf was that the other adults that went needed to let their hair down. LET the kids have fun w/o always acting like the adults. There was always some kid getting in trouble for some totally stupid thing.

Re: Back from Camp!

AWWW so glad you had a great time Telos and especially glad you were able to touch someone's heart. My little cousins just got back from a week at church camp. They helped to build homes for habitat for humanity. They came home amazed at the horrible living conditions of some people, the best part they came home feeling good about themselves.

Re: Back from Camp!

Sounds as tho camp was great for you and everyone else...it really warms and renews the spirit to be involved in such things. Hopefully you'll be able to do it again next year, if you want to!

Re: Back from Camp!

Fantastico! And ain't it good to be loved and appreciated? To have reached through to even one person in need ... is a huge accomplishment.
