Do schools always involve police now?

I was reading our local paper and in the police report it says "A 15 year old boy was charged with disorderly conduct after slapping another student at school".

I'm wondering why the heck the police were involved with this? Wouldn't something like that just call for detention or something?

Are schools taking the discipline out of their hands and putting it into the polices'?

I was involved in a little rumble when I was in 11th grade. (It was my boyfriend and my ex-boyfriend fighting, but I got in the middle too.) We all got suspended for 3 days. I would hate to think of being cuffed and stuffed for a school brawl!

The more I hear come out of the public schools, the more seriously I think of homeschooling.

I believe some High Schools-not sure about below that...have a police liason. A police officer that works with problems that may have occured at the school trying to resolve conflicts, problems. Trying to stop a small problem that might develop into a larger problem.

I think they do it to decrease their liability. For instance, you get in a brawl with another student, you are both suspended...but when you come back to school he brings a gun and kills you. The school could be held liable for not protecting you. Now, if they involve the police at least they can say they took it seriously and it's up to the police to decide how to handle it.

I remember when the "weapon" a kid brought to a brawl was a roll of quarters to hold in their fist to make their punches harder.
