Don't you hate having to call to cancel accounts?

I know that's how a lot of these places stay in businesses but what a hassle. The big culprit is AOL and it's one big joke. But now Columbia House DVD Club is forcing you to call to cancel. I can understand things like Connections or those "trial membership" sites people join through MyPoints, but the CH bugs me. I've been a member for a long time, I fulfilled my membership requirements, I've bought lots of DVD's and now I'm just tired of it. I don't need or want anymore DVD's and I hate being pressured into continuing my acount.

Re: Don't you have having to call to cancel accounts?

You know I was reading online that some people have chosen the "Member Deceased" option online which cancels the account. All other options, however, say "We're sorry. Please call 1800Something to finish cancelling this account."

Re: Don't you have having to call to cancel accounts?

I've never really had a problem canceling accounts...the only one I CAN remember canceling is MSN (internet)...I tried using it for less than a month...called them up and altho they DID try to persuade me, I didn't get charged again for it...now I have heard some horror stories that would have given me nightmares!

Re: Don't you hate having to call to cancel accounts?

I used to do telemarketing so I have learned how to talk to these people, no matter how hard they try to convince me of anything, I just keep saying NO NO NO! Over and over. Sooner or later they take the hint and give up.

By the way, I fixed your typo in the post title! LOL!

Re: Don't you hate having to call to cancel accounts?

OMG I just hate it. People PC was a bad one. I called TWICE to cancel and was still getting charged.

AOL bites too. I do it through the mail, but keep getting postcards that my account wasn't cancelled yet because I didn't have the right information on my cancellation request (which I know for sure I did.)

One day I got a postcard in the mail at home telling me my account was still active because of incorrect information. Well, I hadn't had an AOL account for about 6 months AND the address I used was my PO Box, so I have no idea where that even came from! (And there were no charges going to any credit card I own.)

The newpaper is bad too. Recently I wanted to cancel my weekly delivery because often the paper just sits in the box, or goes straight from the box to the garbage. I just want SUNDAY delivery. Well somehow they talked me into Saturday/Sunday. No big deal. But just 2 days later a salesperson was calling trying to talk me into weekly delivery!!!! "Just for a dime a day" the person tells me. I told him he can pay ME a dime a day to take it, and I still don't want it. ARGH!

I actually hate calling for anything. I wish I could do everything online. Partially because when you do have to call, it's a 1 in 100 chance you get someone who speaks English properly. I needed support from Dell one day, and I was on the phone twice as long as I should have been because I had to constantly ask the person to repeat what they said.

Today I have to call Staples because I have a return I need to make, and it says you have to call for an authorization. COME ON. How many places make you do that? (We don't have a Staples in our area.) I wish I could claim I was mute and do everything via e-mail.

Re: Don't you hate having to call to cancel accounts?

Look people, It's a fact of life. It's the way the business world works. You just have to accept it and deal with it. If you really want to cancel you will tactfully say no and move on. Actually, if you come across real authoratative and decisive they will back off. However I know sometimes you have a dumb jabroni going through the motions who will read his/her script robotically without paying the slightest bit of attention to you. That gets me pissed. You just gotta laugh at them.

I was checking out work-at-home jobs and one is answering calls for orders. Like some things you see on late-night infomercials - when you call to order you actually get someone just sitting at home who takes calls!

Anyway, some of the gals who do this said they have to really push extra items, or they get reprimanded and could lose their job or not get credit for that order. They can't take the first no as an answer.

What a PITA. I could never do this job.
