How old were your kids when you gave them "the talk"?

We did it pretty young with the first two, around 9. It was sort of a basic explanation about human development, as well as "the talk." Then as my daughter got older I would talk to her more every so often. My husband has had "the talk lite" with my son since the first talk.

Now I have a new 9 yo, but for some reason I am thinking of waiting a little longer with her. I figure I will know when the time is right.

Re: How old were your kids when you gave them "the talk"?

I have two DD's age 13 and 9.
The talk we had was more about growiing up and development, not so much about , you know, adult relations.
I actually took out several different types of feminine products, let them look them over, explained and answered any questions. I also bought them some kid friendly books in case there was something they felt uncomfortable asking about.
We had this talk about 2 years ago.

Re: How old were your kids when you gave them "the talk"?

I have a book...sort of like a "Where Did I Come From," (I think that's the title) that I have looked over with my 8 year old. We don't get into a lot of technical detail but he definitely knows that babies don't come from the stork. I think my mom had the "girl stuff" talk with me when I was about nine. She was a nurse, so she was very good at it. We have talked a a lot about private areas and good touch vs. bad touch. I really hope they can feel comfortable coming to me if they have questions or issues. So I guess you could say I'm doing it in stages as we go along.

Re: How old were your kids when you gave them "the talk"?

We're pretty open about it. I mean, I don't believe there has ever been "A" talk. When ever the kids have a question they just ask. So I guess it's an on-going discussion. I'll NEVER forget having to really give the details about how a baby is born. "Mad About You" episode when Helen Hunt/Jamie gave birth to Mabel (sp.)...They wanted to know why the doctor was "down there"....yeppers, it was my turn to answer questions. LOL! A couple of weeks ago our 9 year asked about condoms...he said he knew WHAT they were used for, but he seriously wanted to know how they WORKED! He wouldn't let Kenny (Dad) off the hook until he (Kenny) explained the reservoir!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, this all took place IN the grocery store..LOL!

Re: How old were your kids when you gave them "the talk"?

HAHAHAHA!!! Mouse that is a hoot, in the grocery store. HAHAHA!! With my kids it was on going chat also, I took every opportunity to speak up, I guess I started about your body etcc..but by the age of 11-12 my kids knew it all. I will never forget driving home my DD and about 6 of her friends on the day they had sex ed. OMG!! They held nothing back as I drove them home. They had things sooo confused and backwards, ex: they thought the hymen grew back...some didn't even hear it mentioned in class, one girl said "well you can't get pregnant if you have your period or are breast feeding, cause I heard my Aunt talking about it." As I swerved off the road...rofl So needless to say when I got my daughter home I sat her down and was very specific with her. Then when she was 17 about a month before she left for college I took her to see a GYN because I never wanted her to be afraid to go. She is now 26 and has girlfriends who have never been and she escorts them on their first visits. She tells them you are never exempt from cancers or illnesses just because of your age, better safe than sorry. Makes me kind of proud of her to be honest. Then the other day we had really strong winds and as I was walking into the house I looked down at the flower garden and there in its little package was a condom, I picked it up and looked at my son and he goes "well it isn't mine! Sheesh mom!" he is 20 yrs old and embarrasses easily. But I took the opportunity to remind him about the dangers etc....
