Has everyone started their gardens yet

Well, I did it this year. Planted 16 tomatoes, 10 peppers, 150 onions and then planted flowers and bulbs and strawberries. I am just plain tired. We have a lot of trees around our house and I only had a small area to plant in. I ran the men of the house off, so that I could plant everything by myself. It is still living so I guess I did a good job. Here is a nice picture of it. DH added the RIP sign in the middle. Also, I did the landscaping at our house and here is a picture of that. I love to do outside things when MIL is asleep inside. Takes my mind off things. My inside avacado plant is growing just fine. I guess I have developed a green thumb.

Re: Has everyone started their gardens yet

We may have a possible snow showers Saturday....soooooo...not a good idea for me to be planting anything just yet unless I am POSITIVE that we'll no longer have any freeze warnings. LOVED the photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am waiting for the storm clouds to clear around here. Yesterday hubby and I took off on a little quad ride while the kids helped a "neighbor" (quotation marks were only used because this neighbor is like a mile away...lol) walk his mini-horses and help with feeding....a couple of hours later hubby and I were SUDDENLY tired...it HAD to be all of the fresh air we were finally able to enjoy...LOL! Kinda sad when you think about it...LOL! I wanted to go ride along the woods edge today, but I don't think the weather is going to cooperate. I guess I COULD be cleaning out the flower beds and such, but....well....I'll wait until I know I can be out there planting soon after.

Re: Has everyone started their gardens yet

It is so strange the weather. Ohio is close to KY where I am originally from. My aunts and uncles all live in Portsmouth and surrounding areas. My mom and dad drove down to Catlettsburg, KY yesterday and dad said it felt like it was going to snow the whole time. It was nearly 80 degrees here. I hope we get some better weather down that way soon.

Re: Has everyone started their gardens yet

Tues. and Weds.day were both GORGEOUS. We had some pretty gusty winds yesterday, but for the most part it was low 70s! Heehee...on both days I put some bed linens on the line outside to dry!!! Well, yesterday I had a little trouble putting a blanket on the line because the gusts of wind, but nothin' that 12 clothespins didn't take care of...LMBO!

I think I have to wait until May up here but I would really like to plant a garden this year. Your landscaping, home, and garden are all beautiful!! I have a craving for home-grown tomatoes now.

What a pretty setting you live in, with all those trees.

We haven't planted anything yet, but I was tempted when I saw all the 6 packs at Target yesterday. I usually plant impatiens and begonias in front, to fill in around our perennials, but the backyard is DH's domain -- he plants usually 6 tomatoes of various types, hot peppers, bell peppers, basil and cucumbers. He hasn't prepared the beds for planting, so I don't want to buy anything till I can put it in the ground right away. It denifitely feels spring-like here, with all the flowering trees getting leaves now

Nothing yet, but it's hard to resist buyiing potting plants.
We're getting slammed AGAIN today with snow, schools closed. We usually have to wait until May for any planting.

Re: Has everyone started their gardens yet

You have a very beautiful home. It looks like you are in the middle of a forrest. Our homes are so close together that there is not much room for a garden. I did plant a garden at my dd school for her class that I'm in charge of. It has rained so much that I have not had to water it very much. I picked a cabbage and some red lettace right before spring break. I made two salads and everyone tasted it. We planted peas a few weeks ago. Our garden is in a very shady place but peas do very well and the kids love to eat them raw. I just bought some radishes to plant next week when we get back to school. Each class does not have a lot of room so I have to be very creative how we plant. We also have some strawberries and flowers. Potatoes also do very well so I will plant a few of those too. For some kids this is the only garden they know.

Ground is still frozen here...no digging for a few weeks still. Oops, I forgot....I moved. I don't have a place for a garden anymore. I will have to do planters this year.

That reminds me of when I did that for my kids' elementary school. They grew some amazing sunflowers! The kids seemed to enjoy tending the garden and watching everything grow.

Re: Has everyone started their gardens yet

Actually, it looks like we are in the jungle but I made it that way. We have neighbors (most of which will be eating lots of my tomatoes) and they are just wonderful. I pretty much hand groom my lawn and bushes. My husband says that the house is mine, the Garage is his. I should post a picture of that. He spends every free moment there. It is a two car one. There is a 61 Corvette, 69 Camaro and a Roadster. I have lots of insurance on him should he decide to go too fast. I just love my garden. I hope I can get the rest of the dirt off of my legs. All are invited for dinner when the tomatoes ripen.

Re: Has everyone started their gardens yet

Actually Eldo, that reminds me. Kids do seem to respond to growing plants. The kids that DH teaches like to come and help me at the museum during the day. Last week I took the worst (and I do mean the "worst") as they were classified by the school system and they helped me for hours and hours and they could not have been nicer, kinder or more organized. They helped me plant flowers in front of the museum. My husband said they were the troublemakers in the room and they always acted out. Well, they were the most wonderful kids and workers I have ever had. Perhaps plants just do that to people.

Re: Has everyone started their gardens yet

A ROADSTER!!!!! Ohhhhhhhhh that is at the top of my list of most favorite cars!!!

My 9 year old LOVES to help plant...veggies, flowers...doesn't matter. I'll tell ya...it's hard to explain to people why there were tomato plants growing NEXT to our side porch for the past 2 years! LOL! We pulled some of the volunteer (tomato) plants from the garden area and Codey claimed a tiny plot of ground next to the porch. You can't really tell a child that it looks silly....those suckers were HUGE...sadly they were so close together that many never ripened. Funny thing about that tho is it was alright with him because our "neighbor" likes fried green tomatoes...Tom was able to have all he wanted all Summer long

Re: Has everyone started their gardens yet

There is a restaurant down here that sells "green fried tomatoes" for $3.95 each. They aren't nearly as good as the ones you can fix yourselves. They are among my most favorite foods. Last night I planted even more tomatoes. They appear to be among the few things I can grow.
