I hate crutches!

ROFL--I do. I hate them. When will modern medical supply people come up with something better than crutches but less expensive than a personal attendant? I'm having foot surgery tomorrow and will be living on those stinking crutches for a VERY long time. I got a walker hoping that will be some relief for my arm pits. I'm putting my office chair on wheels in the kitchen so I can roll around on the lineoleum. I have stairs to go up and down so I figure I'll just sit down and do it that way rather than kill myself.

I thought I'd just ask those of you who have any experience with crutches for any tips, tricks, ideas to ease my hatred of having to use them. I have set up the spare room for my nest. I have tried to remember all the tiny things you run and get throughout the course of the day. I have books, movies, cd's, magazines, and the computer set to be able to use. I've done everything I can think of. Do any of you have ideas?

Are your arms strong enough to use forearm crutches instead of standard? I made the switch years ago and you could not pay me to go back to standard crutches. As for the stairs I normally go up and down standing up rather than sitting. I slide my crutch up the arm that so it is out of my way while I use the railing and use the other normally.I also use the carry bags that they sell for the forearm crutches(they attach right to the crutch). Some people find backpacks throw them off balance while on crutches so try one with someone there to help you if it does.

Hi Freefinder! Thanks for the tips. Surgery went off without a hitch and I only hurt for one day if you can believe that! I'm not up and around much yet and won't be for another week.

I had my first check-up today which went perfectly aside from getting in and out of the house. What a pain. The doc wrote a Rx for a new gizmo for peeps like me who really don't do well with crutches or the walker. It is called a Roll-About. It is a little contraption that is on 4 wheels, has a handle bar and a padded "shelf" for kneeling your leg on to keep weight off of your foot. I'll get it tomorrow and that should help take all the work off my arms, shoulders, etc.

Our stairs have a landing, are carpeted and the railing only goes all the way up on one side. Makes it more difficult to go up, but I can practically just slide down like a slide.

Crutches are a pain! I can't believe the upper body strength you need to use them for days at a time. Its like doing mini pushups all day long.
