| Re: I just joined Nutrisystem for a month... Be careful. Terri Schiavo did Nutrisystem to lose weight too. I think she was also bulimic though (not positive) but isn't that what they think caused her to become ill?

| Re: I just joined Nutrisystem for a month... I'm not sure. (Being almost 6 months pregnant has zapped my memory it seems.) I remember reading she was on Nutrisystem and they also think she was bulimic and something to do with having potassium deficiency before she passed out. She also lost a lot of weight...someone else here must know the whole story.

| Re: I just joined Nutrisystem for a month... Here's what I found, I cut and pasted: Friday, March 25, 2005 By Daniel J. DeNoon One of the scariest things about the Terri Schiavo tragedy is that many, many women – right now – risk the same fate. According to the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation (search), Schiavo collapsed in her home not because she had a heart attack or stroke, but because her body chemistry was horribly out of balance. Court documents state – and medical records suggest – that the then-26-year-old woman suffered from bulimia (search), an eating disorder. In that, she is not alone. An estimated 1 to 4 percent of American women suffer from bulimia. The central symptom of bulimia is repeated cycles of binge eating followed by purging. Purging means self-induced vomiting and/or abuse of laxatives, diuretics (water pills), enemas, fasts, and/or excessive exercise. And these people – the vast majority of them women – run a terrible risk. Terri Schiavo, for example, collapsed when her potassium levels (search) dipped frighteningly low. Her heart stopped, which likely caused decreased blood flow to her brain, leading to her brain damage. Johns Hopkins psychiatrist and eating disorder specialist Graham Redgrave, MD, has seen similar cases. "I have known two people who died of electrolyte imbalance (search)," Redgrave tells WebMD. "Neither were in treatment at the time. Both were actively engaged in disordered eating behavior. And I have treated patients walking around with a potassium level that, if you had it, it would be lethal. Their bodies had adapted. But it is not clear that this is a stable state. If life events become more stressful, and you engage in eating disorder behaviors, it is more likely you would decompensate and have one of these terrible events." Nobody realized that Terri Schiavo might suffer from bulimia until it was far too late. How can we recognize bulimia in our own loved ones? How can we help? Sounds as tho she had an eating disorder (s). Perhaps she was dieting AND bulimic. That would be very dangerous.... I'm definately not bulimic...(I hate throwing up!) lol I also came across this on another website about Nutrisystem: Basically, many of their meals contained a good amount of high glycemic carbs (as do most of the popular pre-packaged 'weight loss' meals, shakes, and bars). I've always felt that - even though it is possible to lose weight with them - the effect high-glycemic, sugar-based foods have on your overall health makes them something to avoid. Well, NutriSystem has not only stopped using high-glycemic ingredients but, now, their entire program is based on 'good carbs'. I predict that their new healthier meals are going to catch on big time with people who don't like to cook. Last edited by Brenda2000; 03-25-2005 at 10:23 PM. |

| Re: I just joined Nutrisystem for a month... Wow. Very interesting. I hope this is a wake up call to the young women who are bulimic. You don't hear much about Nutrisystem anymore though....it used to be the big thing too.
