That is totally amazing I just do not even know what to think of this one...

Girl, 5, Cuffed, Arrested, Thrown in Police CarFriday, March 18, 2005
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 5-year-old girl was arrested, cuffed and put in back of a police cruiser after an outburst at school where she threw books and boxes, kicked a teacher in the shins, smashed a candy dish, hit an assistant principal in the stomach and drew on the walls.

The students were counting jelly beans as part of a math exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary School ([Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]) when the little girl began acting silly. That's when her teacher took away her jelly beans, outraging the child.

Minutes later, the 40-pound girl was in the back of a police cruiser, under arrest for battery. Her hands were bound with plastic ties, her ankles in handcuffs.

"I don't want to go to jail," she said moments after her arrest Monday.

No charges were filed and the girl went home with her mother.

While police say their actions were proper, school officials were not pleased with the outcome.

"We never want to have 5-year-old children arrested," said Michael Bessette, the district's Area III superintendent.

The district's campus police should have been called to help and not local police, he said.


Bessette said campus police routinely deal with children and are trained to calm them in such situations.

Under the district's code of student conduct, students are to be suspended for 10 days and recommended for expulsion for unprovoked attacks, even if they don't result in serious injury. But district spokesman Ron Stone said that rule wouldn't apply to kindergartners.

"She's been appropriately disciplined under the circumstances," he said.

The girl's mother, Inda Akins, said she is consulting an attorney.

"She's never going back to that school," Akins said. "They set my baby up

This is something a lot of parents are hoping for - a chance to sue someone.

Observation #1: The girl had a temper tantrum. You can get arrested for a temper tantrum?

Observation #2: The apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree.

Observation #3: I'll bet that little girl will think twice before doing something like that again. (Unless her parents coddle her and let her know how much money her outburst will bring them.)

First off, I think it is ridiculous to do any such thing like this to a FIVE YEAR OLD TEMPER TANTRUM THROWING CHILD.

I dunno..I feel sorry for that little girl, it HAD to be scary, but...well...I dunno. Mom's little comment doesn't help. I feel like a virgin...the only time I even THOUGHT about suing anyone was because of a car accident.

Hmmmmm.... I think the mother's response ("They set my baby up") was a bad sign. That little girl certainly needed to be taught a lesson, but calling the campus police would have been a better choice, IMO.

Seeing the reaction of the mother makes it obvious why this girl has the attitude she has. Her 'baby' needs a foot up the butt. There is no reason for that child to disrupt the entire classroom and get violent with two adults in charge and break someone else's property.

I think Dr. Phil has seen these kids about five years later with the parents saying they don't trust their child cause the child has told them they want to kill them.

They lock the child in a room at night and sleep with one eye open.

Interesting- and 30 years ago the principal would have handled this temper tantrum with a spanking paddle.

I agree with those who say tht the mother's attitude speaks volumes about how the child reacted. Always the victim!! "'Set up"? I am just wondering who "twisted the child's arm" into screaming, breaking things, kicking the principal, etc. Let me tell you, if this were my child, my foot would definitely be up his butt. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for a child to act out in this manner...especially at the age of 5. She knew better!

I just don't know what in the world we are doing to kids today. I throw little tantrums all the time. LOL. I think that the media is just trying to come up with news.

Not disciplining them, spoiling them, teaching them that they can do no wrong, splitting them between parents who live in different households, then giving them half, step, etc. family. Ever see wedding announcements and everyone (parents, grandparents, siblings) all have different last names? There just doesn't seem to be stability in many households any longer!
