Has anyone bought new dishes lately?

When I bought my condo 20 years ago, I went out and bought (or I should say, settled for)a set of dishes. I never was truly happy with them and vowed to get another set some day. That time is now. There's a Pfaltzgraff outlet about 45 minutes from here. I had been eyeing the French Quarter pattern for some time. Yesterday I took a ride there with a friend and bought service for 8 Will still need to go back in a few weeks to pick up serving bowls, S&P shakers, sugar & creamer set, etc.

Now, my question is, what do I do with the "old" set? I really don't have the place to store the dishes and would like to get rid of them real soon. What did you do with your old dishes? Pass them down to other family members? I don't have anyone. Too bad it's not during the summer. I would save them for the beginning of the semester for when the students come back to school. Somebody would probably jump at them for free. Don't think the Residence Hall Director would want to store them for me...that's pushing our friendship a bit.

Thanks for any advice.

You want them, they're yours!! If I remember correctly, you go to school in Boston, but live in CT. 1 1/2 - 2 hrs and I'm there!!

Seriously, I'll take a ride up to Conn. Just want to get them out of the condo. Wouldn't be able to do that until May sometime.

Let me know. Will try to get the dig camera charged and take a photo, if you would like to see them. They have a brown ring on outside of plates and bowls.

Re: Has anyone bought new dishes lately?

dibogart-they have the 20 pc. dinnerware set of French Quarter in my Gold Box on Amazon today for $59.49. I don't know if that's a good deal, but I thought I would let you know. It looks really pretty. I saw that and thought...isn't that the pattern that someone was talking about on DOD? Do I have a life...noooooo!

It ships for free and they have a deal going on right now. Special Offer: Receive a promotional certificate for $20 off a future Amazon.com purchase when you spend $99 on Kitchen & Housewares products. Offer valid through May 9, 2004.

Re: Has anyone bought new dishes lately?

Dontcha love Pfaltzgraff? I got 2 20 pc sets of Naturewood for my birthday last year and I love them! One of these days I'm going to get up to Branson to their outlet store and go nuts!

We couldn't bear to part with our old dishes since we got them when we got married so our son said he wanted them for when he moves out. We boxed them up with our old silverware and put them in the attic to gather dust for about 5 years!

Re: Has anyone bought new dishes lately?

If you live in a college town, you could also go ask over in married student housing to see if anyone needs some dishes I know that when DH was in grad school, a set of matching dishes would have been nice & most grad students stick around over the summer.

Re: Has anyone bought new dishes lately?

Kat, thanks for the suggestion, but I do work for a university, but we don't have graduate housing yet. It's on the plans, but not for several years. I've spread the word around with some of my students, but I haven't heard from anyone yet.

Re: Has anyone bought new dishes lately?

I did just buy a new set of the dishes the other day. I am boxing the old ones up, in the box the new ones came in. If I were not saving them, I would take them to my local thrift store. They sell the items and then use the money to buy food for local needy people. If I did not have that type of store near me, I would give them to the church food pantry to give to a needy family. My dd is in college and will need my dishes in a few short years. That is why I am saving mine this time.

Re: Has anyone bought new dishes lately?

I was working out of another office today and just happened to mention to one of the students there about the dishes and she jumped at them. She's going to be moving out of her parents' home in June and needs everything, dishes, table chairs, whatever. She even offered t come to my home and help me pack the dishes. I'm so relieved now that they will find a nice home. Student even invited me over for dinner after she moves to visit the dishes. Now, just need to get the time to wrap them in paper and box them.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Cool Diane...you didn't even need to go far to find someone who could put them to good use.
I think I'm ready for a change in dishes myself.....maybe...LOL!
