OK, so I can't afford a Dyson, what should I get?

My vacuum cleaner died this morning. Not good timing since my van is in the shop getting a new tranny. Anyway, I would love a Dyson, but it's not going to happen. I'm hoping to spend around $150. What vacuum cleaner would you recommend? I don't have pets, just messy children.

I have had this one for about 2 years now and LOVE IT! It's on sale for $96.92 I think I paid about $150 for mine when it came out.

It's amazing how much dirt and hair this thing picks up! I got it when I was going through chemo and losing my hair rapidly! It takes a licking and keeps on ticking!

Hoover's work fantastic. I have the Windtunnel Bagless. Lots of members got the same one.

Re: OK, so I can't afford a Dyson, what should I get?

Last year I did extensive research online and through Consumer Reports prior to buying a vacuum. Ended up getting a Eureka Boss Smartvac and love it. My old Hoover was at least 15 years old and I couldn't believe the cleaning power of the newer machine. Amazon has lots of informative reviews of different makes and models. As a matter of fact, I ordered it from them because they had free shipping and a $10 gift certificate promotion at the time.

It is funny that you should mention Phantoms. I went to a discount vacuum store and the owner said the Dyson used to work for Phantom. He said that when Phantom went belly-up, Dyson took the concept and made his vacuum. He tweaked the design, but the workings are the same. He repairs both Phantoms and Dysons, even showed me a couple in the back of the shop that he was working on.

I have held off on a Dyson and will probably hang on to our Hoover Wind Tunnel. That is the one the guy recommended, and I said. "Great! I already own one of those!"

edited to add

Oh, I forgot to say that he thinks they are a pile of junk. Not my words, but his. His said he sold them for awhile, but that he got tired of having to send them in for warranty work and listen to his customers complain about them, so he quit selling them.

The Dyson?!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I can't believe buying a vacuum cleaner excites me! I think vacuuming might be my favorite chore!

He's the first person I've heard say the Dysons were a pile of junk...best vacuum I've seen in my entire life.
