Question sell by date on bacon?

I tried to find an answer and couldn't. I have bacon in the fridge that has a sell by date of march 11, is it safe to eat?

Re: sell by date on bacon?

A calendar date on the packaging of a food product that indicates the last day the product can be sold.

The "sell by" date tells the retailer how long to display a product. It guides the rotation of shelf stock and allows time for the product to be stored and used at home. The date is quality driven, not a food safety concern.

Re: sell by date on bacon?

I agree, the sell by date is just the date it has to be off the shelves in the store, whether it is good or bad. If has already been opened, I would not eat it but if it is still sealed, check smell and color - these are pretty good indicators.

God Bless!!!

Re: sell by date on bacon?

It has not been opened and looks ok. I just wonder what the last day is I can eat it and if it is safe to eat tonight. I know there is a time period after the sell by date but I don't know how long that is.

Don't ask me. I once ate a package of cheese that had a Sell By date that was over four years earlier.

LOL @ PiP

Actually there is a cheese over a hundred years old and considered a delicacy.

As long as it smells ok and is not looking bad or feeling slimey I would cook it up and let someone else taste it first LOL Then if they seem to be liking it I would make my self a BLT

I was thinking this too. I would probably eat it if it looks o.k. Now...lunchmeat? That's another story!

Re: sell by date on bacon?

If it looks good & it smells good, we do the dog test. If she eats it, then we can proceed to the kid test. And if they eat it, then it's fit for hubby. LOL

Me.. I don't eat bacon, so sorry, I don't have a clue as to how long you can keep it. But I think you'd be safe as it's only 2 weeks past and you've had it sealed in the fridge.
