Smile Does anyone remember the fall of the Berlin Wall?

I was just thinking about this. I remember watching it on TV, I actually started to cry, I was so happy for those people. What a momentous occasion that was. I never thought I'd be alive to see that happen in my lifetime. The last time we were in Germany we took a train to East Germany, and when we got out of the train station I thought, OMG, here we are, actually in East Germany. I looked around to see if anything was different, and I noticed that alot of the cars were older models, but the people were so helpful and friendly when we needed directions. I remember that well.

Re: Does anyone remember the fall of the Berlin Wall?

Sure. I had just returned from a trip to Europe when that happened. I was a bit fearful for the safety of the people shown on TV as they were attacking the wall with sledgehammers. The happiness of the German citizens was really moving. Now it's strange to think that we used to say "East Germany" and "West Germany."

Yes I do, but I also recall when it was being put up in 1961. I was traveling throughout 15 countries in Europe. After Switzerland the next stop was to be Dusseldorf, Germany. We weren't allowed off the plane because the wall was being put up. After a 2 hour wait at the airport we were sent to Belgium. And spent extra time there instead of in Germany.

Re: Does anyone remember the fall of the Berlin Wall?

My hubby was just telling my kids about that the other day.
He was listening to a song about it and began to explain it to the kids. It brought back memories of seeing the wall comming down on the news. I did not really understand about it at the time but now it is a powerful memory to me.
God Bless!!

I sure do remember it, and I was corresponding at that time with a woman who lived in East Germany, and she was SO happy. The thing she noticed the most, when she was able to travel to West Germany was the color. There was so much of it everywhere.

She was also happy that she could buy M & M's (they're called Smarties over there). I sent her a huge bag of them when she was living in East Germany.

It DOES sound weird to say East and West Germany now!

Wow Toby, that really must have been something, they were actually putting the wall up when you were over there. That's such a part of history. You were privileged to have been a part of that.

Belgium is beautiful isn't it? We have friends over there. The last time we were there they were having a huge beer festival, with all the beer wagons and horses, it was a spectacular sight to see.

I remember it. The mother of a college friend of mine was a jornalist, and brought home some pieces of the wall, and he gave one to me.

I remember when the department stores were selling pieces of the Berlin Wall in little felt bags. I just looked and you can buy a piece of it on eBay.

Re: Does anyone remember the fall of the Berlin Wall?

I was not in Berlin. The plan was to go to Berlin originally but it was switched to Dusseldorf and the plane was not allowed to de-board anyone. We flew to the next country instead. So, no I didn't see the wall going up.

Re: Does anyone remember the fall of the Berlin Wall?

Yes I remember it. I used to patrol "the wall" when I was in the army. I was in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. I was there for 3 years. I wasn't in Berlin, but I patrolled the border between East and West Germany. Mostly it was us, watching them, watching us, watching them. Our "border camp" was on top of a hill. About a mile or so away, on the "East" German side, was a grade school. We use to get a kick out of watching the kids at that school because they weren't any different than the kids here in the states.

I guess the funniest thing that happened was, one day I had the "tower" duty. In our compound, we were not aloud to listen to loud music, because it might offend the east side. On this day, I was the Sergeant in Charge of the tower. It started about Noon. I heard loud music. It took a minute to figure out it was coming from the town on the East side!! They were having a festival or something. We couldn't see the town proper because of the trees. But the town was having a party!! They rocked from Noon til Midnight! I mean music from White Snake, Def Leppard, ZZ Top, Poison, and they even did alittle Lynyrd Skynyrd, which made them cool in my book!

Well, after 3 years, I got sent back to the states. THEN! the wall came down!! I was extremely glad for my German friends. I too was a little teary eyed. I wish I could go back now and see what it's like. Hmmmmmm, I wonder if that "party"'s still going on. hehehehe.
