Arrow Wal-Mart Checkout...Keep Your Eyes Open!

My DH & I went to get groceries last night and I was watching the girl ring up our groceries. We bought some Gatorade and when she rang it up I saw a #2 underneath the word "Gatorade" I thought does that mean she rang it up twice? I really wasn't sure so after I paid and got the receipt, sure enough, she rang it up twice. It was one of the powder mixes so she overcharged us almost $8.

I wonder how many times this happens? All that beeping you hear from the checkout lines you never can really tell if that's your item beeping or someone elses. The way the swipe those items in a back and forth motion I can see how the machines would pick them up twice and they too probably don't pay much attention to the beeps.

I am definately going to be paying more attention and DH (who normally gets the groceries) will also be on the lookout now!

Just a heads up!

Re: Wal-Mart Checkout...Keep Your Eyes Open!

I've had that happen before, and even though I think it's an accident, it's still a big owie! Also, I've had things ring up at the wrong price (on sale, but not rung up at sale price). So, I always try to load up the conveyer really fast, or even better, have someone loading for you ... so that you can watch as the prices are ringing up. If I see something wrong, or suspect something's wrong, I mention it right away ... it's so much easier to get it taken care of right then. I usually try to double check the whole register tape before I leave the store, because I just hate to have to go back in and try to resolve it then. But, yes, I know what you mean about keeping a good eye out for that. I'm sure you would eventually have caught the mistake - especially since it was an $8 overcharge, but if you didn't catch it until you got home, how could you prove that you didn't actually buy two of the powdered Gatorade? I guess then it would be your word against theirs. Ugh.

Yah I know, I am glad I caught it before we left. She went through all our bags to make sure we didn't have two.

Oh, I am VERY vigilant about watching prices as items are rung up. I can't tell you how many boo-boos I have caught. We were once double charged for a box of diapers at Sam's Club which was a $30 mistake!!! I like to get in lines that have at least one person ahead of me when I'm by myself so I can get everything unloaded and be at the register to watch it all ring up. Of course if DH is with me, I make him unload so I can watch...

Re: Wal-Mart Checkout...Keep Your Eyes Open!

It's not just at WalMart - this stuff happens everywhere! DH went in to grab the out of town Sunday papers and a few groceries last week. He paid for the papers at the service desk, then grabbed the groceries & paid for those in the normal check out line.

When he got home, I saw the check out girl had rang up the newspapers for a second time with the groceries (he didn't even put the papers up on the belt, so she just saw them in the cart & entered them into the total).

It's a good thing we live in a small town where they believe you when you come back in & show them the mistakes because those two out of town papers run almost $6 & now he knows not to pay for the papers BEFORE he grabs groceries.

Re: Wal-Mart Checkout...Keep Your Eyes Open!

Happend to me at Walmart this morning as well. It was in the photo dept. I went to pickup my film that I sent off and noticed I was charged 4.80 I was thinking that was a bit much since only 17 pictures came out. So the lady recheckd and said oh yes it should be 2.38 .. I know it is not a large amount but it kind of ticked me off because usually I do not look at things like that and so there is no telling how often i have been took at the photo lab before..

Re: Wal-Mart Checkout...Keep Your Eyes Open!

I am very picky about watching the prices, I think that is why I love the self checkout lanes at walmart, it's IMPOSSIBLE (because it weighs the items and you can't scan the next item unless your first item is in the bag) to ring something twice!
