Bath & Body Works recalls more than 700,000 candles

WASHINGTON - Bath & Body Works Inc. is recalling some 733,000 votive candles because they can burn with high or irregular flames and pose a fire hazard.
The Reynoldsburg, Ohio-based company has received nine reports of high flames, including two instances of minor injuries, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

Bath & Body Works and The White Barn Candle Co. stores sold the "Real Essence" scented candles, individually and in packs of six, nationwide from March 2003 to February for $1.25 to $18.00.

The recalled fragrances are:

Rosewood Tea
Lilac Blossom
Vintage Leather
Brushed Suede
Warm Vanilla Sugar
Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin
Spiced Cider and Amber Myrrh
The recalled six-candle sets are:

Lilac Blossom
Spiced Cider and Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin (also sold in a "scented home quartet" set)
Consumers are advised to stop using the candles and return them to any Bath & Body Works or The White Barn Candle Co. store for credit, exchange or refund.

For more information, the company can be reached at 800-395-1001, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.

Re: Bath & Body Works Candle RECALL!

Can't this happen with all candles, if you don't keep the wick trimmed? Hey, Paula, candle expert, help!

Yep! From Yankee Candle's website:

Jars

Handle with care; glass containers are fragile. Avoid glass-to-glass contact when removing or replacing the lid. Do not use if the jar is cracked, chipped or scratched. Do not refill with wax.
Do not allow the flame to touch the side of the jar. The jar may become hot. Handle carefully.

If smoking occurs, check for drafts or high traffic areas, which may cause flame to flicker and smoke. Also, be sure that the wick is no longer than 1/8". If it is, extinguish, trim to 1/8", and relight.

To minimize wax left on the sides of the jar, burn 3 hours at a time; it is normal for some wax to be left. The amount will vary per color, fragrance and burning conditions.

Prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface by discontinuing use when 1/2" of wax remains. Only burn in a suitable holder, or on a plate or other fire and heat resistant surface.
Extinguish carefully before replacing the lid.
If I don't keep the wick trimmed, that's when it gets to flaming really high and it puts off lots of soot.

Re: Bath & Body Works Candle RECALL!

So it's it safe to just replace the glass lid on the jar when the wick is lit, therefore minimizing the smoke from blowing the candle out?

Re: Bath & Body Works Candle RECALL!

My husband does that all the time, but as it says above:

Extinguish carefully before replacing the lid.

Re: Bath & Body Works Candle RECALL!

Since we're talking candle tricks.

I always put a few drops of water (don't over do it) in a votive jar before putting the votive in, that way after it's completely burned down, the leftover wax will pop right out! No more caked on wax!

Where is Mouse? I figured she'd jump in this thread and advise us on this candle business.

Re: Bath & Body Works Candle RECALL!

I'm here, I'm here...

K...ALWAYS trim your wicks before relighting...not trimming them will cause that soot smoke.

Now...when it comes to replacing the lids...well I never place a lid back on a candle until the wax has reset...I mean...the melted wax is hot, no use in trapping the heat in a glass jar...PLUS I think it would cause moisture to build up and then you'd have that popping and crackling sounds when you relight the candle.

Re: Bath & Body Works Candle RECALL!

Well, just wait until I tell Romie THAT! I hate it when he snuffs out the flame that way. It gets soot on the lid.
