Question Any advice on area rug grips?

I bought a 5 x 8 area rug to go on top of our living room rug, but it keeps moving. It's a pain to keep having to pull it back where it belongs. I saw they sell pads with adhesive to go between them, but I'm worried it will ruin the carpet underneath somehow. Does anyone have experience with this type for rug on rug?
And where would be the least expensive place to get one?
Thanks!

Re: Any advice on area rug grips?

I would guess that it would ruin the carpet underneath. I'm not a big fan of putting rugs over carpet because I have heard that it will actually wear out the carpet underneath faster instead of protecting it.

My grandmother used to make rag rugs and on the bottom she would sew some of those rubber rings that go on canning jars. This works on a reg. floor but I don't know about carpet.

I bought an oriental rug to put over carpet and got my pad at Home Depot for about $35. They had 2 to choose from and I got the thicker one. They do not have adhesive, but the rug has stayed on the pad so far.

I have two small throw rugs on my carpet by the doors and I bought the adhesive pads at Target. You cut it to size and it really holds it in place. They are washable and have done no damage at all to my carpet. In fact, the carpet looks better 'under' the rugs.

Re: Any advice on area rug grips?

We just discovered a way to do this cheap!

We bought the Grip Rite cushioned shelf liner- it's no grip at Big Lots for $1 a roll or I've seen it at the Dollar Store. I just laid it under the smaller rugs and they don't move on our hardwoods. They are designed for a kitchen shelf so it's a roll but not wide so for a larger rug we have- it took 3.

Maddy has a huge velour rug in her room so we just did it on the edges and it works great too. And it's cheap.

Mentioned it the other day to my MIL and she had done the same thing.

Oops- I saw you are looking for something for carpet- I asked Mike if he thought it would work- we have all laminate hardwoods. He said he thought it should work- for $1- it might be worth trying.

It might work, but like I said, I'm worried it will hurt the rug underneath. One day I may want to remove the area rug and just use the wall to wall carpet, but if it's sticky or otherwise damaged, I won't be able to.

I bought the rug at Target, but didn't look at pads there. When you wash them, how does the adhesive stay on?
Is this a Target brand product?

Maybe you should try calling a carpeting store and see what they have to say. I have used the shelf stuff, too, but not on carpeting.

I think it was a different brand, but they usually don't things that aren't compatible.
They wash beautifully, and I don't wash them too often so I'm not sure how many times I'll be able to do it.
