| Do you subscribe and pay for your subscription or do you read it online? I found that the important news is online and all the other stuff is a waste of time so I don't subscribe to a newspaper.

| Re: Newspaper Subscriptions? We stopped our Sunday newspaper subscription a few years ago when we took a long vacation, and never renewed it. I don't really miss it, because I always felt bad that I didn't have time to read much of it. Occasionally we'll buy one, but we get 2 local newspapers free and it's hard enough to keep up with those!

| Re: Newspaper Subscriptions? I subscribe and read the paper every day. I like getting the coupons on Sundays and sometimes the weekly papers have retail store coupons. Last year dd had to cut articles out of the paper every week for a class. I suppose she could have printed them out online, but it seemed easier to pick up the paper and scan through. Though I subscribe and read the paper, I think that the newspaper is filled with bad news and OLD news. I usually find out breaking news on the radio or here!! lol Old habits die hard and the only time I consider cancelling is when I see the charge on my credit card statement (automatic)!! I think wow I could save some money there. But I know I save with the coupons so for now I'll let things be. DH definitely reads the paper online...and he thinks our paper is a joke so he reads a different one that has more world news. |

| Re: Newspaper Subscriptions? I love reading the paper. You can take it anywhere, curl up with it on the beach, do the crossword while soaking in the tub. That will never be replaced by the internet site. I also listen to NPR for human interest stories and sometimes watch BBC news on PBS. But I rarely watch network news. It's so shallow and ratings-driven. |

| Re: Newspaper Subscriptions? I get two newspaper delivered daily, The Washington Post and The Christian Science Monitor (Monday through Friday). People who read newspapers daily are smarter, and more informed than those who get their news electronically. Because of the electronic media, newspapers today are catapulting their efforts toward deeper investigative reporting and synopses, which, due to timing, cannot be duplicated on radio or TV. NPR does an excellent job at in depth reporting, but, alas, cannot compare to most major market daily newspapers. A great example of the good these newspapers do for the community is what happened a few months ago in Oklahoma. There was a budget shortfall and a property tax hike was proposed. The tax hounds ran television commercials attacking the tax hike proposal in the state house. The two major newspapers in the state, The Tulsa World and The Oklahoman, did true investigative reporting and ran a series of pieces on why the tax increase was actually needed, overdue, and what would happen if it didn’t pass. They reported on economic and social studies that lead the readers to understand the real issues behind the tax bill. The coverage earned both papers editorial awards, and the small tax hike ended up going through with a lot of constituent support because the papers did what they were supposed to do-educate the public on this important issue. If you are in my area, pick up a copy of the New York Times or Washington Post, you will find pieces which are fascinating and educational. From world politics to health issues, you will learn something just by reading a newspaper. Examples just in today’s Post include the history of rebellions in Haiti, as well as a piece on shrimp harvesting/fishing that really did an excellent job in describing the global economic and health issues of shrimp that is sold in the US. Last year, those who read newspapers were less likely to believe Saddam and al Qaeda where working in tandem, and less likely to believe the extent of the WMD the administration was pushing. Those who read a newspaper daily were better prepared for conversations in the office, with clients, or with friends. You just don’t get the full picture reading online or watching TV news. Studies prove your reading comprehension goes up substantially if you read a newspaper each day for as little as 20 minutes. Consider reading a newspaper to better yourself, you will feel a great reward for doing so.

I love reading the New York Times magazine on Sunday; there are great human interest stories that tell the human impact behind news events. I wish I had time to read as much as I wanted. I agree that reading papers for news is the most accurate and least biased source. |

| Re: Newspaper Subscriptions? People who read newspapers daily are smarter, and more informed than those who get their news electronically. WHY? Because you can read the funnies? Or the want ads? Online has all the same info that is important.

The on-line sources of news also tend to focus more on scandal and celebrity stories: Michael Jackson, Janet's show, etc. etc.-- whereas printed newspapers provide information more relevant to improving our daily lives: proper nutrition, proposed legislation, etc. The content is very different: the internet designed to titilate and the newspaper more suited to information and self-improvement. |

The printed paper and the internest web page generally have two seperate editors who decide independantly what stories to feature prominently, if there's a photo, if it's featured on the main page or just linked to another page. The internet editors use different criteria to catch viewers and they do tend to put the most titalating stories on the first page with large photos to catch people's attention. In-depth stories are linked with small headlines at the bottom of the page. The printed paper is different. The front page above the fold is usually reserved for the most noteworthy hard news event of the day. Vouyeristic issues like pics of Janests orb rarely are included. Different audience, different goals, different product placement and prioritization. |
