Have you used "Space Bags"?

A friend of mine is in the process of moving and was thinking of using Space Bags for part of her packing. For those who don't know what Space Bags are; they are plastic bags that you put items in...clothes, bedding, etc and then use a vacuum to suck air out of the bag and making the bag more compact. Has anyone used these? Would you recommend them? Are they good for long term or does air somehow inflate the bag back to normal size? Are they worth the cost?

TIA
dibogart

Re: Have you used "Space Bags"?

I hear they are really good. I saw on Haley's Hints, he just used a hefty bag. This is what I did when we moved, (don't use the cheapy bags!) I used the heavy duty Hefty Lawn and leaf bags, my vacuum cleaner and some rubber bands- then I just reused the bags when we unpacked. It worked well, I had a box that we stored blankets and sheets in and it was completely full. When we moved I used a bag for the blankets and sheets and fit them, my winter clothes, the kids sweaters and coats, and a couple of other bags of the kids clothes all in hefty bags w/ the air sucked out. I would have had to use the box and three or four storeage totes for all of this otherwise.
The Space bags are probably easier to handle but the Hefty bags were cheaper. My blankets and winter clothes were stored in them for about 7 months and came out as good as new. I put them in there flat so they were not even wrinkled, just needed a little fluffing and you could not tell the difference.

God Bless!!

Re: Have you used "Space Bags"?

I have Space Bags and I love them! They are awesome!
I don't think I could recommend using them to move with though. Too much potential to get a hole in one of the bags. And for the price, that could get expensive. I haven't found them any cheaper than for about 9.99 for the large ones.
But as far as Space Bags go for once they get settled, you can't beat how these things work. I had comforters and quilts piled as high as my chest in my closet and reduced it down to a pile almost up to my ankles using only two Space Bags. I intend to buy more to use for winter clothes storage.

The bigger ones are great, but the smaller self-sealing ones don't. I put my hunting clothes in the bigger ones when hunting season is over.

Re: Have you used "Space Bags"?

I am buying one specifically for my husband to do this with, Rod. He suggested sticking one of those earth scented fabric softener sheets inside with your clothes when you seal it. I know that earth scent stuff is stinky but you can't be too stinky for a deer...lol

Re: Have you used "Space Bags"?

I want to thank everyone for their helpful comments. I gave the link of this thread to my friend and she read everyone's comments. Last night on her way home from work, she bought the 7 bag package. She said she'll try them out this weekend and probably go back for another set or two. She sees endless possibilities for these bags. I think I'll stop in and pick up a set, myself. Cata5, I think mine will be used for the blankets and stuff in the linen closet, too.

Thanks again for for your suggestions and comments.

Kenny stores his in a Rubbermaid tote now...WITH his earth scent wafers....he always leaves them in the garage so he needs something more "durable" than a bag...ummmm not to mention, ya'all should remember what happened to his hunting clothes when he had them in a trash bag...YIPES! LOL!

I should get some of the space bags also...or at the least try a hefty for the kids sleeping bags...they NEVER stay rolled up like they should be.

I can't even remember moving all of my bedding, but if I was to do it now...I would definitely use a hefty...UNLESS I did use the space bags, but boxed them up (even if in filing fashion) through the moving process...

Re: Have you used "Space Bags"?

I use the large vacuum sealed ones for storing beanie babies. I wouldn't recommend them for a move, but I think the product itself for long term storage is wonderful! I gained 3/4ths of a closet back using them!

Re: Have you used "Space Bags"?

We use to buy "space bags" but we ended up buying very large clear trash bags (they really aren't made of plastic like a reg. trashbag more of a crinkly material.)

We use our vacum and suck out the air through a corner and then seal them up.

Once a month or so I totally spray my couch cushions with either febreeze or a cleaner and suck them in these bags, it does great job of cleaning them! (or at least making them smell good!)
