Re: ~~~An ethical question~~~

I did not make this up. I got this assisnment in my English 1D class. It's a crtitical thinking class. I would never want to make up any lie to ruin someone elses reputation for my own benefit.

Additionally, thank you all for your inputs. I already made up my mind where I stand, and I agree with many of you.

The reason why I bought with the CIA is because my friend feels that they know information that could potentically save a lot of lives. I don't know this is true or not and that was the reason why I ask.

I'm skeptical.

also: ironic twist: Peter Jennings is Canadian, so if he put Country over Journalism, it would be to save Canada, not America.

Regarless, some interesting perspective here; thanks all.

In fact, I used to wonder this as a kid when I watched news reels from Vietnam. You could see people getting blasted sky high and I wondered why the cameramen kept filming; why didn't they go and try to save people's lifes?

Oh sweetie; I didn't say you made it up! Poor thing! I wasn't questioning you--I was questioning the info.

I wondered if it was one of those urban legends that float around the internet--I'm a natural skeptic. I want proof, data that can be checked.

The great thing is that since it was a homework assignment for you, you can answer my question, I am really curious: What show was it? When did it air? Was it Charlie Rose? I love Charlie Rose, he's a great interviewer!

The main reason I ask is I have seen a variations on that question and wonder which (if any) ever really happened. In one version that was emailed to me yesterday, the made-up country is still "North Kosan" but the interviwees are soldiers and the quandry is a little different. That's why I wonder if Mike Wallace ever said it. Just curious.

Another version I found had the discussion at a college lecture, not a PSB TV show. These kinds on inconsistencies just make me skeptical.

Re: ~~~An ethical question~~~

I got the information from my instructor. I should mention also that it is a college course that I'm taking. Everyday we have a group discussion exercise about different topics. The last topic was about the differences between a mainstream journalism and public journalism. Before that, we discussed about a literature story "The Most Dangerous Game." The story was very interesting by the way.

Anyway, I don't know if the instructor is passing on false information. I can ask him where he got his resource if you wish. Let me know because the next class meeting is Friday.

Re: ~~~An ethical question~~~

I think its a hideous question, and shows how far man has fallen that it was even asked. I am sorry, thats terrible.

Re: ~~~An ethical question~~~

For what it's worth, I checked [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] (my usual urban legend checking place) and found nothing about this particular issue.

To me (for whatever that is worth ... ), each of us is responsible for our actions/choices ..... and must live with their results the rest of our lives.

My other thought is not exactly relevant, but it seems a shame that a few years back the FCC repealed the law saying that media must present both sides of an issue. Now we do, indeed, get (sometimes VERY) slanted reporting....and are asked to accept it as truth.

The other side of this coin is that we should not need laws to "force" us into good, honest, moral choices should we ?

Re: ~~~An ethical question~~~

Hi all,

Today we had the discussion in class about the issue if we should warn the Americans Forces. Everyone in the class, especially the ones that talked anyways, agreed that they would have warned the people. I'm an active listener as well as an active talker in the class and I pointed out why I would warn the people and had to back it up with reasons why. Integrity, lives at stake.. etc...

Anyways, towards the end of the discussion, I asked the instructor if the event really happened because I remember many of you are skeptical about it really occurred. He said that the actual event really happened but it was a while back and the event of the discussion even got published in a book. I don't remember the exact title of the book. However, I can find out for you if you wish.

Well, thank you very much again for your input.

Take care!!!

Re: ~~~An ethical question~~~

But what if Wallace has a son fighting in that imaginary war, would his answer be the same?

In the same token, what if Wallace did not give a warning and his son was in the ambush and died, would he regret his decision?
