When do children learn to count?

In the past week, I noticed that Emily (who will be 21 months on Friday) was counting to 2 consistantly. Well in the past couple days, she moved up to 5 and then today as she was turning pages in a book she counted the pages- to eight. That seems advanced to me, but I'm not seeing anything online about the average age for such a thing and I can't remember when Julia (5½) started counting that high.
Basically I'm asking is that normal or am I right to be kind of freaking out about it????

Re: When do children learn to count?

When it comes to kids, everything is normal! Especially when they're not the first born, because they pick up so much more from older siblings.

Shane is 18 months old and counts to 3.

babycenter.com says that around the age of 2 children can count to 10, but kids do things at such different rates.

A friend of mine had a daughter who could recognize her name before she turned 2.

Re: When do children learn to count?

My youngest daughter did everything twice as fast at my oldest. They are little sponges and for some reason seem to learn a lot faster from a close older sibling than their parents. I think they just want to keep up. They are 10 and 8 now and my 8 year old still wants to learn and do everything her sister does, I think she will pass her up one day if her sister is not careful.
I have worked in the nursery with 1-3 yr olds for the past 8 years and it surprises me what some of them know and understand. I have some 3 year olds that are so quiet and reserved, you never know what is going on in their little minds and then some 1 and 2 year olds that just amaze me with what they say, their counting, saying the alphabet, (or at least parts of it). Babies know, remember and understand a lot before they can actually express it, so be prepared, more amazing things to come!!
(:

God BLess!!

Re: When do children learn to count?

My son could count to ten at about a year old (he use to count his plastic toy rings) but he is slightly advanced in everything he does. He can count to infinity now (or at least he tries! before I tell him he HAS to stop!) he is 5 now. He is advanced in both math and reading. He started reading at about 18 months, and we found out last week from his special reading teacher he reads on grade 4.8-5.1 in reading, and even got many of the college words right! I am so proud!

Re: When do children learn to count?

Katie is 17 mths and is counting to 3 by herself, higher if I prompt her. I've also been teaching her the states and tonite she shocked her father when he had his visit with her. She was talking to him and told him Massachusetts. He looked at her mom and said did she just say what I think she said. She can also say her whole name first middle and last when you ask her. Everyday she picks up more and more. My husband keeps telling me how much smarter she is the his children where at that age. But it's just Katie and myself her for most of the day so we pass the time by counting and learning colors and states and such. Only if she wants to though sometimes her attention is elsewhere. LOL
