Do you know what fondue plates look like?

I was just talking about a wedding present I bought yesterday on cata's thread and it made me question my gift.

It's a set of 6 fondue plates from Williams Sonoma.
There is nothing on the box or the bottom of the plate that says they are fondue plates- if you opened this- would you know that's what they are? I saw the desription on the price tag so I knew right away but can't say I would know if I wasn't told.

They are cute- medium size plate that's not square but not circle- rounded edges and has little divider edges for 5 compartments in the pottery. Here's a link so you know what I am trying to describe.

Do I need to mention what they are in the card?

My plates aren't as wide on the edge as the ones above.
Thanks for your help!

I have never seen these before, but glad I know now what they are. I would think if they wanted the fondue set that they would know what they are. How about writing it on the back of the card. That's always nice anyway to keep everything organized. Or you could say something like "hope these work for fondue night" or something more clever than that. LOL

Did she register for them? If so, she'll know what they are. If not, why not get her what she registered for; what she really wants?

Because everything on the registries are complete. Unless it's over $100 and we aren't close to the couple. The fondue plates coordinate with her kitchen colors and the casual china she registered for.

I'd rather get extra of what I registered for than something that doesn't match my china.
Like 10 plates of my pattern rather than the 8 I asked for (some end up breaking) rather than some other pattern that I didn't ask for.

What ever happened to giving a gift because that's what you want to give---without worrying whether it is exactly what the person has registered for? I would never buy a different china piece because usually the china pattern is well thought out because of the huge expense, but I see no reason why a person can't use the registry as a guide and get whatever they please.

Re: Do you know what fondue plates look like?

The plates match their casual china and they registered for a fondue pot so I think my gift was perfect.

I always follow the registry but I wasn't willing to spend the $100+ for this couple and only big items were left. Besides there are not fondue plates that go with any china- it's not part of the any set that I am aware of.

I think they will get plenty of extras so they should be set. I know I returned 2 carloads of repeats when I got married and I kept extra china and casual china. I'm sure they will be able to complete anything left out which is only a couple of things.

If they registered for the Fondue Pot then I can't see where you could possibly go wrong...good thinking there Traci!!!!

I agree, Traci. Fondue plates just aren't a regular part of any dish pattern I've ever seen. Maybe they don't even know that regular fondue plates exist, and I'm willing to bet they'll be pleasantly surprised to receive them!

Re: Do you know what fondue plates look like?

It worked out great. The wedding was last night- my inlaws gave them the fondue pot, we gave them the plates and I wrote on the card:

"Our gifts go with the XXX's gift- fondue is our favorite 'at home' date. Use peanut oil in the pot with steak and shrimp and it tastes just like Dante's Down the Hatch. Enjoy!"

Dante's is an Atlanta landmark fondue restaurant where you sit inside on a pirate's ship- actualy size with motes and alligators all around.

I am sure they will love it. Their casual china was from Pottery Barn in a Merlot color- I got the fondue plates at Williams Sonoma (sister company) and it's the same color at both stores.

It is our favorite date dinner to do at home- we did it for Valentine's Day and it's much cheaper at home- Dante's is easily $75 for dinner. We did filet, fried cheese, shrimp and mushrooms for under $20.
