Question Considering that insects are allowed in chocolate bars, do you still eat them?

I read somewhere that so many insects are allowed per batch of chocolate. I just had some Rolos today, and what made me think of this, is that they were not a smooth tasting as others I've had, they had a slight crunch to them, and I know that's not normal for Rolos

Ohhhhh .... that's sick. I have to have faith in Hershey's to keep my beloved milk chocolate ... insect free ... well, I think the almonds are really just almonds!

That was a trivia question on the radio a couple weeks back - they said there are an average of 8 insect legs in each chocolate bar.

YUM! Protein

Well ... I thought you all were joking ... but now I'm beginning to wonder. This is just sick. I would have thought there'd be stricter laws than that in this country! Ewwwwww!

Re: Considering that insects are allowed in chocolate bars, do you still eat them?

Oh, big deal! Insect legs aren't too disgusting; I just wouldn't want to crunch down on some yucky internal organs. And the chocolate is cooked, so I'm really not worried about germs. But most important, it's CHOCOLATE! So I just don't worry about it!

Darn, now I want a chocolate bar!

I'll agree...but only if we're talking "contaminated" chocolate...LOL! I'd doubt I'd care if there were reports saying every bar had 8 insect heads included...yes, I love chocolate THAT much...LOL!

Re: Considering that insects are allowed in chocolate bars, do you still eat them?

It's true. We've discussed this before.

Quote:
The U. S. Department of Health publishes a booklet entitled "The Food Defect Action Levels" and lists specifications of "current levels for natural or unavoidable defects in food" for chocolate in the form of "insect, rodent, and other natural contaminants" allowed by the FDA. Tolerance levels for chocolate and chocolate liquor used in the manufacture of such products as Hershey's chocolate, are up to 120 insect fragments per cup (8 oz) or 2 rodent hairs per cup. That means the Hershey's chocolate bar you eat may contain one rodent hair and 16 insect parts, and yet carry the FDA's blessing.
Read it, if you dare.....LOL (just check out various spices) [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

I first read about this in "The Book of Lists" several years ago. It was a list of the top 10 most contaminated foods, and chocolate was number one.

I figure it hasn't hurt me yet, so I'll keep on eating it, but I DID take back the bag of popcorn I got at the college basketball game tonight, when I looked down and there was a dead spider just inside the top edge of the bag. I hadn't even gotten three steps from the concession stand and noticed it. Of course the guys working the concession stand just looked at me like, "That little thing really bothers you?" They didn't even say sorry, but they gave me a new bag.

Re: Considering that insects are allowed in chocolate bars, do you still eat them?

Okay, what I'm wondering is have they heard of pest control? lol

WHY does there have to be bugs and rat hair in my chocolate? Is this place just crawling with pests that they can't control it? Or is it from the natural products like when they pick the cocoa beans or something?

I would like to say this doesn't affect me, but I was a little less than satisfied last night when I was munching on Hershey kisses. Bug legs kept popping into my head. lol

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - DON'T TAKE AWAY MY CHOCOLATE BLISS!!!

Crunch, crunch. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm sure we eat much worse that we don't know about...not to mention all of the bugs and spiders that climb into our mouths while we sleep. I would go on Fear Factor if I thought I could get through the physical challenges. I have no problem eating the gross stuff! I agree with Shanie...DON'T TAKE AWAY MY CHOCOLATE OR YOU'll LOSE AN ARM!

I just assumed by your comment that you were not a chocolate lover. It was not meant to offend.

bestmidwestern, yeh, some of the stuff on Fear factor is way out there, the internal organs they have to eat, yuck! I'd rather watch the show than be on it.

I try not to think too much about bugs in my chocolate, but that crunchy rolo just made it pop to mind.

Shainie, 8 insect legs in each chocolate bar, that's just gross.
